Home remedy for depression

Posted by tabitha on September 8, 2004, at 2:03:23

I read this in some mainstream magazine, maybe Oprah magazine, and it kinda made sense..

1) First clear off and clean up all the surfaces in your home.
2) If that doesn't work, then do 3 small things you've been putting off.
3) If that doesn't work, pray.

(of course they left out Take your meds, but we already know that one, right?)

Interesting...I think if I started with number one, assuming I could even do it, I wouldn't have any time to feel depressed. Oh wait, I have to do number one. My inlaws are coming Friday!!!!

(Okay, not to be too scatological, but due to my meds, I have trouble doing number one...)

:)

I just got back from visiting family in the midwest. It was an amazing thing.. all their houses were spotlessly clean. I'd forgotten what that looks like! The enormous yards were all perfectly mowed. And they don't have maids or gardeners. Such culture shock. I came back to my dustbunnies and clutter, and for a few minutes it looked wrong to me. But I think I'll get used to it again quickly.

I hope you habituate quickly. My mother in law does use a cleaning person. I wish I could. I am not so good at housecleaning. So much more important stuff to do...

If I clear off and clean up all the surfaces, then where am I supposed to put all the stuff that was on those surfaces? Hmmm. . .

That's funny ... about 30 years ago, a friend walked into my apartment and said, oh my God, you're depressed, and set to cleaning the place from top to bottom.

Afterwards - I helped of course, I felt so much better. TO have my place clean made a huge difference to my mood, and to have cleaned it with someone who cared that much - that was important too. I've recognized it as a symptom of depression ever since.

The accomplishment of things I've been putting off is also a big anxiety reliever.

But most important of all is exercise. If I get a good bout of strenuous exercise, it chases the devils away. Not forever, obviously, but for a time.
