Hey everyone..not a bad day..had my appt with dr hottie and it went well...Then my primary dr appt and he wants me to stop the lexapro right away with the gradual way as to not bring my symptoms full force back and he talked about Prozac..He first talked about effexor but have heard some not so great things..I told him that I would think about the prozac and will stop the lexapro over the next couple weeks or so gradually...

Melissa got in to see the specialist for her hyperthyroidism and they will start the testing in a couple weeks and determine if it is graves disease or some other type which is easier to take care of and may go away...so prayers really worked today as she wasnt feeling good and was able to get an emergency appt with the specialist that was scheduled for aug 19th..so thank you all for your prayers....

I hope that everyone is doing good and I will catch up with you all tomorrow...again thank you all for your prayers I think they just might have worked with melissa....your friend yo yo Heidi

Mystic,

I am concerned about you going off of Lex and not having a back-up. You mentioned Prozac... Sometimes when doctors want their patients off of SSRIs, the will switch them to Prozac first and then have them decrease the dosage. That's because Prozac has a longer half-life - stays in your system longer - so it isn't such a sudden decrease of SSRIs. So maybe if you want to try Prozac, you could consider trying it now. Then if it doesn't work for you, you will have a little easier time getting off of SSRIs on the Prozac. Just an idea. Keep in mind that I am not a doctor and this is only a suggestion.

I was on Effexor for a few years. It worked pretty well for me - better than any SSRIs.
But it was a little rougher coming off of.

I am glad to hear that Melissa is getting help. We are praying for her and you.

God bless,

Simus

Hi. I think this is where I was hoping to write. I have been on the lexapro - 10 mg - for 10 days. I really liked it at first, and I guess I still do. NOw I notice that I need a nap every day after lunch. It's o.k. now as I teach 3rd grade and am on vacation, but I can't be this exhausted. Now I can understand why I need the wellbutrin to get that zip of energy. I'm going back to the np on 8/18 so I'll talk to her about that.

Also I am still sleeping like a log at night which I do appreciate, but I should not need a nap as well unless it's my enormous sleep deficit. any thoughts? Thanks , Calico Cat

Hey Calico...you are in the right place many people can help you and are more than willing..You have only been on the lex a short time it should even out..some people have trouble sleeping some people sleep too much but it usually evens out and some people on the board take both the lexapro and wellburtrin..are you still on the wellbutrin?? I would enjoy the rest and sleep as we all need a lot of that just to cope and wait it out and like you said speak to you dr and see what they think...if you need anything just ask..take care Mystic

Hi there Calico Cat! (As a side note, I love cats, and have a soft spot for calico cats.)

Mystic is right, 10 days is a VERY short time to make a determination on Lexapro. But sleepiness is a common side effect. It made me sleepy during the day, and I used to fall asleep at my desk at work. (That was so embarrassing!) I am no longer on Lexapro - just Wellbutrin now - but many are happy with their results on Lexapro.

I know Mystic already asked, but are you on Wellbutrin, or have you taken it before? It isn't for everyone, but some people do very well on the Lexapro/Wellbutrin combination. They seem to kind of support/compensate for each other.

Good luck, and again welcome.

Simus

Hey CC,
Welcome to the Yo Yos, we call ourselves that because of our many ups and downs. If you need support and friendship you have come to the right place. Here you can totally be yourself and everyone is so wonderful. It is sooo nice to find women who have had the same experiences as you. I have been on lex since december and really know I would not have made it though the first month or graduate school without these women. So welcome.
10 days is a very short time to be on lexapro. I work with psychiatrist and most of them have been very disapointed with the "magical" 10 mg dosage. After being on 10mg for 9 weeks and not being very impressed, with it my p-doc put me up to 15mg which was night and day. Then up to 20mg which was a little too much for me. Everyone has there own dosage. I have been feeling so good lately that I am on 5mgs doing pretty, well, except PMS... but that has been much BETTER since dropping my dosage.
About the wellbutrin, what are you taking lex for? Wellbutrin does give you that burst of energy but it is also not that great for people that have anxiety and a lot of people, I have had expereince with ( I am a Liscensed Masters Social Worker) find Wellbutrin alone not to be effective. However, there are exceptions, like Simus is doing GREAT on it. If you want to take Wellbutrin, and you have anxiety along with your depression or whatever, you may want to keep a Xanax on hand just incase the Wellbutrin makes you more anxious. It may however be a good thing if the Lexapro is making you sleepy. When I first started I had insomnia for two weeks. I was also really spacy for the first few weeks too. The side effects do pass so hang in there if you can. Good luck and let us know if we can help!!!
Cheers!
Lexy

Hi everyone. Thanks for getting back to me.

I was on wellbutrin after being on effexor. The wellbutrin did nothing and I couldn't sleep. Then I was on the lex and the wellbutrin. NOw I am just on the lexapro. Yesterday I was such a zombie all day. I could not move very quickly. The mornings are the best for me. I'll probably take a nap again. Taking naps just makes me feel so lazy and unproductive.

The reason I was wanting to go back to wellbutrin is the burst of energy it gave me. It was probably just nervous energy but it got me moving even if the wellbutrin didn't make me feel better emotionally - I think the lack of sleep did not help either.

I find that I like talking about these medications because no one I know seems to understand, Calico Cat

> I was on wellbutrin after being on effexor.

Can I ask how long you were on effexor, how it worked for you, and why you stopped taking it? I was on Effexor for a few years, and it worked better than the SSRIs for me.

> The wellbutrin did nothing and I couldn't sleep. Then I was on the lex and the wellbutrin.

How did you feel on Lex and Wellbutrin combination at that time?

> Now I am just on the lexapro. Yesterday I was such a zombie all day. I could not move very quickly. The mornings are the best for me. I'll probably take a nap again. Taking naps just makes me feel so lazy and unproductive.
>
> The reason I was wanting to go back to wellbutrin is the burst of energy it gave me. It was probably just nervous energy

Forgive me if you already know this, but the Lexapro, an SSRI, targets serotonin in the brain. Wellbutrin targets different brain chemicals, such as norephineprin and dopamine. Effexor is an SNRI, which targets serotonin and norephineprin. (I believe this is accurate - it's been a while since I read up on it). So if you did better on Effexor than Lexapro, you might actually feel better on the Lexapro with a low dose of Wellbutrin. But you have only been ont he Lex 11 days now, so it is a little early to judge the effectiveness of Lexapro.

> but it got me moving even if the wellbutrin didn't make me feel better emotionally - I think the lack of sleep did not help either.

> no one I know seems to understand

That's the nice thing about this board. Between all of us, you are likely to find someone who has been through exactly what you have a question on. Not even doctors can really tell us what to expect because they haven't lived through it themselves. Sometimes I wish they would live a month or so on these drugs just to get a little more compassion for us who are suffering through the med thing.

God bless,

Simus

Hi Simus. It sounds like we are almost in the same boat. I took effexor for almost 2 years. I gained weight - 20 pounds. I then reduced down to 75 mg with the hopes of losing the weight. Shortly thereafter, I went on the pill to control my period. And, the effexor just stopped working, but I wanted to get off due to the side effects. Starting from March to May I took effexor and wellbutrin. I felt so awful, mostly due to the effexor withdrawal. Then I was on wellbutrin alone for almost a month. I was thinking of just stopping as I could feel like this with no meds. Then in June I went to a psych np - she added the lex to the wellbutrin - I only did this for 3 weeks, but I started to feel really well. I could sleep and I had energy. NOw it is just 10 mg of lexapro and I am feeling so awful today. At first I felt well but the fatigue is overwhelming. I go back on Aug. 18th so I will ask her.

Sometimes I get really discouraged because I thought medication should make you better, but it is hard to tell before you get into all of it. And, thanks for the information about all the medicines. I think the serontonin is what my brain needs the most for sleep - except now I feel asleep all the time. Thanks for letting me vent, Calico Cat

Calico Cat,

If helps at all, my pdoc says that most peole do need a combination of a couple of AD's to treat their symptoms--that one is usually not a perfect fit for each individual's case and that this is perfectly normal. As for me, I am a big proponant of better living through chemistry. Good luck!

Yeah... You, me, and hundreds of others on Psycho-Babble are all in the same boat on this one. You aren't venting, just stating the obvious. But we just keep plugging along. At least we have someone to talk to about it here. And there is always going to be someone here who understands because they lived it, as opposed to our family and friends and even our doctors.

As for the weight issue... sigh... I'm ready for the antidepressant that makes people LOSE weight.

Best of luck, and keep us informed.
