((((((Ghost)))))))
i'm sorry you have to move, but like AngelGirl said, there are times that you need to do what's best...and this may give you just the chance you need to get back on your feet and some time to take care of you.
But just cuz you're moving location physically doesn't mean you'll stop posting here right??????
i'll miss you terribly!
And what ever happened to that girl at the kwik shop at 14th and D? :)

Best Wishes for a safe move!

I was just thinking about you. (((B2C))) how funny!

and yes, it will be nice to live rent free while my other bills pile up. i'm hoping to hell i get this job, though. It'll really help me get back on my feet financially. and maybe getting a real job with real hours and real weekends off will help me get more stable emotionally, too.

and heck no-- if anything, i'll be posting MORE from my parents' house!! No job, endless wireless access-- whole lotta babble!! heh.

thanks.

okay. i'm motivating myself by writing here. i'm gonna list the things i need to do today and hopefully that'll get my butt in gear to do them, because i just told a bunch of people (you guys) that i'm gonna do it. so here we go:

-take books to used bookstore (hope i make some money!)
-bring more trash to dumpster
-call AAA about getting a cheap rental pickup
-put stuff being kept into back of closet to make room to remove dresser
-disassemble bed (ugh-- big waterbed frame)

These are attainable goals for the day... i hope. it's only 10:30am. I've already brought two carloads to the thrift store for donations. That's progress, right? Whew!

Hi Ghost,

So long as you're doing this for positive reasons, I think what you are doing is great. My house used to be cluttered with things I didn't even know I had. I had always been a bit of a pack rat, but back in September of 2003 I started to "cull the herd", and nowadays I'm much more organized and I'm sooooo happy for it.

You'll be amazed at how the atmosphere of your home changes. Open space has a beauty of its own. It also helps make you feel much more organized.

Best of luck to you, I know how hectic this can be, especially when you try to pack it all into one day. Do what you can, and don't become discouraged at the things you didn't accomplish, take pride and enjoyment from the things that you do accomplish.

-Scott

It would have helped if I had first read the original post that explained why you are doing all that cleaning up. I'm sorry you're where you are now, but perhaps a fresh start is not a bad thing.

I have moved 4 times since the beginning of February 2004, so I do know the stress and constant distraction of prepping for a move (especially if you're already not in a good mindset... I hope you get some sleep soon!).

I haven't made a BIG move like yours since 1999, but I sure do remember it. You have my sympathies, and my genuie hope that when you get to where you are going, you get to take a decent break and find a good job.

I'm doing this because I have to move from Nebraska to New Hampshire because I'm unemployed and cant afford to live here any more. (My parents are in NH-- so I can live there for free for a little while, because the cost of living in NE is certainly cheaper than in NH!) But I know what you mean... it makes me so sad to do this, but in a way it's so LIBERATING!

I look forward to having a new apartment again where i can start fresh and furnish it how i like... and preserve the open space.

Hi Ghost.
I'm cheering for you to get that job.

Thought you would like to know, NH isn't that bad of a place. Even a couple babblers here.
If you don't mind my asking, which part of NH would you be moving to? We have a little experience with some of the local therapists, psychiatrists, etc. in the seacoast area. If you would like us to look into anything for you, please let us know.
I've been getting rid of lots of 'stuff' lately, I want to get rid of lots of distractions, and it's amazing how much more room there is afterward. I would much rather set up house with less 'stuff' in the way.
Good luck,
Dee.

I actually went to HS in NH. nice place to visit, wouldn't wanna live there is what i always say. i had NO idea there were babblers in NH!! it'd be swell if our paths ever crossed. i always thought i was all alone there in my misery.

> If you don't mind my asking, which part of NH would you be moving to? We have a little experience with some of the local therapists, psychiatrists, etc. in the seacoast area. If you would like us to look into anything for you, please let us know.

I would be going to southern NH (Derry), but I'd be willing to drive east for the right therapist (it's not like I'll have a job!) but if you knew of anyone in the Manchester area, that'd be great, too. (or if any of the other babblers knew...)

i love open space. it makes me feel so good. but i love a few comfy pieces of furniture. the ones that always make you feel good on a bad day, you know? i hope i find some.

Completing your list and clearing out the clutter must give you a real sense of satisfaction. I personally think a cluttered environment gives you more stress. Now, I need to find the motivation and energy to do something around my place. I should probably start by brushing the 2 cats. Maybe that way, I'd have less cat hair to vacuum up all the time. They're very good at shedding. ugh!

Anyway, congratulations on completing your list today.

Your acomplishment is encouraging to me. I'm trying to move out of my Grandmother's, but there is so much clutter I don't know where to start! I'm pretty sure alot of it has to do with OCD and the hording that sometimes comes with it. I have bags and bags of bills dating back several years, as well as other junk. I know I will be so much happier when I do move, so why am I dragging my feet so long? I've been saying I am going to move out for at least a year and a half now. I know the answer – I don't want to face the disorganized mess. I'm sure yours isn't as bad as mine, but I admire your ability to do it. Good luck in your move. It may be just the change you needed.

I found it was easiest to start where I spent the most time-- around my couch and comfy chair. because then i had the instant gratification of having an uncluttered favorite area, so it motivated me to keep going.

it was REALLY hard to let go of stuff. I'm a packrat, too, so it killed me to get rid of some stuff. i finally started asking myself "if i haven't used it so far, will i use it again?" or "what will happen if i didn't own this any more?" or "what are the chances i'll get a newer, better one of these if i sell or donate this one now?" and once i caught myself trying to keep "strange" things (old notes people wrote me whom i don't even speak to any more, for example), i knew it was time to take a break and come back later.

anyhow. good luck with YOUR sorting and organizing and whatnot. and thanks for your kind words.

Hey TexasChic, i knew we were born of the same make! I'm a horder as well. However, regarding the papers that i have- i consider it to be well organized and business like. I have a filing cabinet for my bills, incoming/outgoing the whole schpeal. AND i keep my papers for 5-7 years. Infact just this last weekend i shreded some insurance monthly statements from 1998. I was quite proud of that. ;^)

Anyway, it's the other items that can bring a person down sometimes...all that dang clutter. So i do understand your frustration.
Just take it one piece, one section, one room one area whatever at a time. In fact sometimes i've heard that setting a time frame works for some people. rather than saying i'll clean up the spare bedroom you say i'll spend 1/2 hour in this room, either cleaning or organizing and this way you don't look at what you didn't get done you look at the accomplishment of actually spending the full 1/2 hour working on that room/area.

Whatever works right?

That's exactly what my T said, to just spend so many minutes a day on it. I've done it and it does work, I'm just not very good a staying with something I don't like doing. Plus its just hard sometimes when you've used all your energy just to get through the day. So I guess I'll just have to develop some discipline and get to it. I mean, I'm only hurting myself because the sooner I do it the sooner I can move out. Since my mom moved in with me and my Grandmother, well, lets just say its been bad. So I'm just sitting around being miserable when their is a very clear solution. Sigh. Like the title of this thread says, motivation.

i have a heck of a time staying with something that I don't like doing, too. i mean, who wants to do something they don't like? and i agree-- when so much energy is expended just to survive the day, it's that much harder to set aside time to add more discomfort to your day. but what about the big picture-- you can get out of your grandmother's house if you can put aside a few minutes a day to sort and go through things! which is a good thing, from the sounds of it.

i'll think motivational thoughts for you (and me... i'm not done yet).

I'm a packrat too and it amazes me sometimes how fast things can accumulate without you even realizing you're doing it.

I've heard that one of the key things in de-cluttering is to only pick up an item once. Decide right then and there what you're going to do with it. Don't say to yourself that you'll put that one aside and think about it later. Later will never come.

Another problem people have when trying to purge some of the clutter is letting emotions getting in the way. I think you have to look at it from a practical standpoint instead. As someone (sorry I forget who) said earlier in this thread, if you haven't used it in 'x' number of months or a year or whatever time frame you decide on, what is the likelihood that you will ever use it.

When it comes to clothes, if you're like me, you might have several sizes hanging in your closet. You hang onto the stuff that's too small hoping that someday you're going to get back into that size. But reality is that *if* you ever do get back into that size, are the clothes still going to be in style and would you really wear them?

Unfortunately, I'm one of those people who look at things from an emotional point of view, therefore making it harder to purge items. I think sometimes you just have to be brutal about it. Maybe get a friend to come and help you that doesn't have any emotional attachment to the items who can steer you in the right direction.

Have any of you watched the show "Clean Sweep" on TLC? I love that show. A "Clean Sweep" team comes into your home and you show them 2 rooms that you want to have de-cluttered so that they are more livable. It simply amazes me how some people can live. My clutter doesn't even compare to their clutter, thank God! They are pretty brutal with the people on purging their items and they hold a garage sale for what they're getting rid of. The "clean sweep" team also redecorates the 2 rooms, keeping in mind what the function of the rooms are supposed to be and providing the people enough storage for the items that they are keeping. They totally reorganize everything for the homeowners. I really recommend watching this show if you'd like some ideas on de-cluttering and/or organizing. At the very least it will make you feel better about your own clutter when you see how other people live. lol!!! Maybe you could even apply for the Clean Sweep team to come and help you with your own clutter. :D

Personally, I would probably be traumatized if Clean Sweep came here and started purging my stuff.

> Another problem people have when trying to purge some of the clutter is letting emotions getting in the way.

that's totally my problem. it's stupid stuff too, like "my dad gave me this cardboard box, so i have to keep it." man, i wonder about myself sometimes.

> When it comes to clothes, if you're like me, you might have several sizes hanging in your closet.

that's a really good point! and it makes me feel better that that's what i was thinking when i got rid of stuff in my closet this time around. i thought "well even if i DO get back down to this size, will i *really* want to wear this? if i ever shink, i want new clothes, damnit!"

> Maybe you could even apply for the Clean Sweep team to come and help you with your own clutter. :D

man, that would rock if a babbler got on clean sweep!
