Raz,

Do you take meds? I'm a sleepy depressive; I think I made it 14 hours once.
Read info on Keith Richards, he hasn't slept since '92. With Jagger as a partner, I'd sleep with one eye open too.
I can't imagine staying awake for 5 days. If you do try, I hope you eat well and don't take Vitamin S to help. That will almost guarantee temporary psychosis or death.

"If i think of doing summet i have to do it."
Why? After 5 days of no sleep you may think you can fly. Please don't try it, I flapped like crazy and sunk like a rock.

And please, stop thinking. : )

Actually, I've known meth addicts who would stay awake for very long periods of time. I'm 50 and they would have been but their hearts stopped..forever. I went to ones funeral(his dad died very young from heart disease)and an African-American man who was playing in a softball tournament with my friend did the eulogy.
He said before the game, he and my friend got on the subject of death. My friend said when he goes he hoped it was quick. Less than one minute later he dropped dead.
Sleeping keeps us from losing our minds. I wouldn't advise losing your mind, I haven't enjoyed it at all.
Maybe try shooting for the world pushup record would be better.

Phil

When in college, I once went three days without sleep and NOT on purpose. Have NO idea why I couldn't sleep but finally went to the U clinic (which I don't advise) and they were sure I was on speed, in spite of blood tests that were negative. I checkedon AMA, went to my apartment, fell on the floor and didn't move for twenty-four hours (I think it was sleep but I'm not sure). I was so disoriented that I couldn't identify basic furniture, like a couch, and it took me a month to recover.

I think you have received the information you requested and I hope you were prepared for the reactions you received and did not find them surprising.

I do not understand your want for this undertaking, but it is your life and your choice, and the fact that I (and many others) don't understand is irrelevent. We would like to see you make what we preceive as a better choice... but again, the point is moot.

Your friend has requested support and positive motivations for you... the best I can come up with is..... I hope no harm comes to you.

Sleep Deprivation

Well, given that sleep deprivation is used as a form of torture, it can't be all good. You could probably Google it and find out lots--I know it's been studied extensively.

Good luck if you decide to go ahead with it,
S

Raz, I get the feeling that you are quite young. If you take good care of yourself, perhaps you will live long enough to realize that life really is very short. Some years ago, my mother suddenly dropped dead. She was only a little older than I am now, and I am not old. When you realize how little time we have on this earth, I hope you will find more productive ways to spend your time.

The very fact we only have a short time on this earth is why i want to achieve things... How many people can say they have tried to stay awake for 5 days on purpose? put 66 pegs on their face? stood on a phone box?
Everybody lives life in the same way, hardly anyone thinks of something different.. Randomness should play a big part in everyones life.. Cheers for the post dr.bob but i will attempt 5 days then go on to better challenges in the future... at least then i can die with a big smile on my face and go woo i enjoyed life to the max...

i dont have to no but i want to... i dont wanna change my mind
so wats temporary damage to my health? it'll be over in a few week, like im really bothered. It will effect me no1 else, yes my friends will be there but i'll have no bricks nearby.
besides ur missing the whole point! im doing it to establish a record. Im doing it so i know how long i can stay awake. thats the only reason why... theres no point in telling me im gonna damage my health n i'll hallucinate cos i know this... and no1 will convince me not to go ahead. it will be benificial.

Hi i'm a friend of Raz's and just wish to say he has the support of all his friends and family in this challenge he has set himself and we all will be taking turns to monitor him 24 hours in 6 hour long shifts. His personal safety will not be compromised as he will have at least one person with him for the duration of the 5 day stint, and there will be no hesitation to call a local doctor even just for advice if any noticeably unhealthy symptoms occur other than slight hallucination.
I personally think the challenge is a little odd though interesting to see how he copes. We will promise to keep you updated on his progress when the challenge begins in april, and we would encourage you to send positive and motivating messages of support to this site to keep him going. I'm sure he'll even personally reply to you in whatever fucked up state of mine he is in :)

John.

I just want to say that my husband stayed up for about 5 days (he was using meth though) but he ended up in the emergency room with little brain zaps. Like mini-stokes. This was a year ago and it seems his days awake caused him to have a nervous breakdown- and he thinks he will always have effects from the mini-stokes (like numbing in his fingers etc..but good luck to you on your "challange"

Re: 5 days without sleep--Chronic Insomniac Here

I've never been awake for 5 days. The longest I've ever gone is three days. This was not on purpose. I've always been an insomniac.

The thing is once I started psychotherapy in 1992 my psychologist and I figured out that I had nightmares every time I went to sleep. This began a 12 year (so far) journey to heal from childhood verbal, emotional, spiritual, mental, physical, and sexual abuse.

Three years ago (roughly) I started meds. I finally got evaluated by a psychiatrist and we found out that I've been depressed my entire life. My current diagnosis is Major Depressive Disorder with Recurrent Features. Ever since being stabilized I have realized the best sleep cycles ever.

Currently I've been prescribed Ambien for emergency situations. I take valerian, passionflower, scullcap, and chamomile occasionally. I've also had various different benzodiazepines at different times to assist my sleep. Currently I take Neurontin at night and I've been prescribed extra to take when needed to help with sleep.

Basically, it's taken meditation, medication, herbs, prayer, energy work, hypnotherapy, aromatherapy, pscychotherapy, massage, and chiropractic to have somewhat normal sleep patterns.

Multi-pronged approaches have been the only help for me..... I find not being able to sleep a serious issue and I would never stay up for days for a lark...
