going to a new dr tomorrow

Posted by sarita0001 on October 5, 2003, at 20:00:12

Hi,

Tomorrow I am going to see a new psychiatrist(6th one so far) and I hope it will be ok. After all these years, I am finally starting to make more decisions instead of trusting the doctor so much. But the last time I was given a lot of choices with meds, it didn't go well. So I guess it's like you're damned if you do and if you don't.

I also blame myself for a lot of treatment decisions I did or didn't make. But at the same time I am happy that I have more insight about things now. My plan now is to try and go off meds because it appears that I may have not needed them for so many years to begin with. Then I get mad about that but it's over, you know? I don't get it. All these years I have been dealing with a diagnosis of manic depression myself, no help from family. They were afraid to approach me about it- for 7 years. Friends don't really get it, they're great but they don't know what to tell you about your mind.

Whoever took time too read this thanks;this is therapeutic for me.

Sara

Good luck! It is so hard to know how much to trust the doctor and how much to trust yourself. He knows more about the meds, you know more about you.

It's great that you're more aware now...years of experience helps with that, huh? If you and your doc are a good match, then he/she will understand how much you've been through (including your experience and knowledge in the drug realm) and you should be able to strike a nice balance. try not to get discouraged at first.
Man it's so aggravating to have to go through your ENTIRE history one more time, isn't it?

Good for you!

That's why it's nice on this board. People REALLY get it, and it's a true comfort.

Good luck tomorrow!

I hope it goes well for you tomorrow. Good doctors are hard to find, so I hope this is the one!

Just curious, if you're coping with your manic depression alone, and it sounds like you're not doing as well as you'd like (since you say your friends don't understand), why do you want to go off medication? Perhaps a change in the medication would help, but it seems that going off it altogether will only make things worse. Make sure you think it through very carefully, and listen to your doctor's advice before doing anything with such potential to upset your life.

Good luck tomorrow!
