hard to find a good psychiatrist....

Posted by sarita0001 on September 22, 2003, at 18:34:51

hello,

Out of all the psychiatrists I have had(about 5-I've moved alot) I only liked the one I had for 5 years. I called him tonight to see if he could refer me to someone since I am new in the area and he didn't know anyone. I asked him if he could answer a medication question and he said he couldn't because he retired and didn't have a license anymore. I was pretty bummed out. I think I was so attached to him because during that time I felt he was the only one who looked out for me. I guess he was like my dad since my dad was so uninvolved in my treatment. Can anyone relate??
If not, it's still goo to "talk" about.

Amanda

Hi, sorry to hear that your psychiatrist retired. That's hard especially when you seenmed to like him! I can't relate here, BUT I used to be able to, no doubt!!
Did you call your pharmacy about your question?
I do believe, in my opinion, that the correlation you made with your dad and this psychiatrist makes perfectly good sense.
I have a psychiatrist now and I respect him~funny I respected my dad (don't know why)
My psychiatrist is great, but I finally manged to get over the transference thing a long time ago and once I did I was soooo much better off!
My psychiatrist is a good man and a wonderful doctor:-)
I wish you the same in finding that type!
Hang in there and good luck:-)

Amanda,

I can certainly understand why it was important to have a psychiatrist who was involved, when your dad wasn't. I am fighting issues which stem to my mother being there, but never understanding any emotional issues (my therapist calls it "disengaged"). When I find someone who can be there for me like she can't, I latch on tight.

I wrote a post earlier on how I have found therapists/pdocs in the past. It might be helpful for you: http://www.dr-bob.org/babble/psycho/20030905/msgs/260173.html

Good luck!

I appreciate the help and support. My therapist said he is referring me to someone this week so hopefully that goes well.

Best,
Sara

Amanda,

Boy can I relate! Here (in Silicon Valley, south of San Francisco, CA) there are many, many pdocs and therapists. The problem is that those covered by any kind of insurance are lousy bordering on criminal or at least unethical and the good ones are booked solid for months and take only cash payment.

Here is the procedure I used to find my current pdoc:

1. Generate a list of ALL pdocs you are willing to visit, i.e., those not too far away or that you don't already know are lousy.

2. Identify all those remaining on the list which are covered by your insurance, if applicable.

3. Take the list to a local _private_ hospital psychiatric unit outpatient clinic. Ask for the outpatient placement nurse. Try to get a name and telephone number so you can call later if needed.

4. Ask the nurse to help you sort out who is the best and the worst on the list. PROMISE that all comments will be kept secret (and keep that promise) and mark your list with '+' (ok) or '-' (bad) or '*' (recommended).

Now you have a list of referrals that you can use to call and make appointments. Remember, the nurses are the ones who really know the doctors because they have to deal with them and their patients when things go wrong.

This procedure is what I used. I had a 3-page single-spaced list of names, addresses, and telephone numbers. At first the nurse refused to help me, but when I explained I was both serious about my needs and desperate for help, she relented and helped under the condition of anonymity. My pdoc is considered by his peers to be one of the best available in the area. I also know several of his other patients who have benefitted tremendously from his help (including one with moderate schizophrenia who completed schooling and got a decent job thanks to the pdoc's help).

I hope this helps.

Ok, since me and my group of friends were kicked out of Pshyco Babble because we weren't talking all the time about effexor,I came to Psycho Social, I sent already 4 messages trying to join Jay's new place but it looks that our messages are taking out because they are not anywhere to be read. No wonder I don't see any response.
It is very hard to find a good psychiatrist and a good site indeed. We 8 of us have being rejected
from this site. How many more will follow?

Redirect: kicked out

I hope you don't feel kicked out again, but I'd like follow-ups regarding posting policies to be redirected to Psycho-Babble Administration. Here's a link:

Yep. There are fewer and few psychiatrists who take insurance and often, the ones who are more knowledgable and good to work with are the ones who don't take insurance.

I had one who was knowledgable but was rather a pain in the butt to work with. I worked with him for many years and just put up with the negatives because he did help me find a combo of meds that worked. But when the negatives increased I left and found a new one, who isn't perfect (annoyingly late all the time, etc.) and I have to pay up front and then get reimbursed, which is a pain, but he is pleasant to work with and knows his stuff.

you're right. It is hard to find a good psychiatrist.
