Blaster

Posted by NikkiT2 on August 12, 2003, at 10:09:39

Just me with my IT Geek hat on....

There is a very nasty Worm (like a Virus) called W32/Blaster that is attacking machines using Windows 2000, NT 4, and XP.

I know ALOT of people who have been infected by this over the past 36 hours, so am sending out a warning to you all!

First.. please please please make sure your Virus protection is up to date. All Virus protection software has released an update for this worm, so please update your system now.

You also need to update your patches if you use any of the above Windows versions. It is a small failing in Windows that is allowing this worm to work as it does.. (basically, it will make your machine re-boot every minute or so). To get the correct patch for your windows version please go to..

http://microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?url=/technet/security/bulletin/MS03-026.asp

If you think you have been affected, please contact me and I can help you to rmeove it and make your machine safe again. If your machine randomly re-boots (every minute or so), or if you get this error message "Windows must now restart because the Remote Procedure Call (RPC) service terminated unexpectedly" you may have been infected.

This will only effect people using Windows, so everyone else would be safe (that includes Linux users, Mac users etc)

how does it come in? Is there a distinctive email you get with it attached?

I always feel safe from viruses because I don't open spam or strange email.. but maybe it's a false sense of security.

So far you do not get is one via an e-mail.
You are infected via a scan.

What do you mean when you say "a scan". A lot of people who are on one of the list serves I'm a member of have been infected. So far, xxxx(fingers), I haven't.

Yep - my IT guy here just deleted the worm from my computer. My PC wasn't restarting, but it was doing little weird things, like it wouldn't let me drag my icons around on my desktop and it did keep shutting down my email program.

But, all is fixed now. Wonderful thing, working in a computer science department! We have great IT support. :)

To download the windows patches... Many many people i know have been infected... and its a nasty nasty little worm.

It doesn't require an email or anything like that to get infected.. all you need is to be connected to the internet.

A scan is a probe of packets to gather infomation.
One can become infected with this worm if you receive these packets.

Do you just have to install the patches, or should you run your virus scan to clean your system just to be safe?

Both. And you should always schedule a full virus scan every week or so. Update virus definations
twice a week, more often if there is an active virus or worm on the internet.

What St James said!!! I currently ahve my Virus protection updating every 4 hours.. or every time I reboot..

So install the patches (very small so won't take long to download, even on dial up) and then update your Virus protection..

If people don't update their Virus protection at least weekly, there is no point in having the software.. Its my own personal rant that I get so annoyed when I tell people to do this, they ignore me, thenc ome crying when they have a virus!! I've ranted at lots of people today over it *lol*

I knew my strong attachment to DOS would come in handy.

After *thinking* they had elimated the blaster worm from my PC yesterday at work, here I am working on the Mac today, due to their difficulty right now in removing the virus. Not sure what the problem is, as it never made my computer restart, which is what I understood to be the problem according to the news, but when they ran the Symantec program, it came up with some kind of error that won't let them finish running that program. I dunno - but I'll let them worry about it. It's just one more excuse to not get my work done. Fortunately, it's not like I don't have a TON of cleaning to do in my office, that hasn't been done since my office move. I hate to clean and organize. Just not my forte.

Anyway, I'm just glad I have a mac at home. I did get my roommate to download the patch for her PC at home.
