My doctor won't call me back.

Posted by kara lynne on March 6, 2003, at 21:23:41

I started calling last Thursday. I have called three times a day since Monday. The secretary tells me not to take it personally. She says she's going to dial the number and hand the phone to him when he gets a break and that he's so 'swamped'. I call back and she says oh, she didn't get a chance to. I can't get an appt. till March 20. It's not an emergency, but I'd like to talk about switching meds, and I'd like to start right now. He's never done this before. I feel like a moron, and I feel like getting a new doctor, but I feel too tired to search out a good one. I'm really pissed.

That happened to me last week, and I needed my medication too! I've never been so angry.
I phoned for a week! Not even one courtesy phone call and she knew I needed my medications.
The receptionist said "She doesn't understand why your G.P won't just write you a prescription"
I explained my G.P was away and his replacement
Dr. won't prescribe psychiatric meds.
The secretary said "Well she won't phone them into the pharmacy I asked her"

It was unreal, absolutely unreal.
Fortunately my old Super P.Doc who is out of town
which is why I can't see him anymore :(
Who runs Two hospitals, and happened to be at a conference, took my panicky call (got back to me in half an hour) and prescribed the medication.
And he was at a CONFERENCE!
I'm never going back to my other "Dr"
But the things is she won't care, even if I tell her why, she just doesn't care..

That's terrible. It really is so infuriating. I guess I'll have to find another doctor--you're lucky you had someone else to call, who called you from a conference no less. This has never happened to me with him before so it's really confusing and upsetting. I know these drs. get overwhelmed, but we're talking a week now, that I've tried. It just sucks being at the mercy of medication and these doctors. I'm so mad, and I invariable end up turning my feelings against myself.

Gee, that sounds terrible. I guess I am lucky in that my pdoc encourages calls at all hours. He just chalks that up to job resposibilities. When he is away or out with wife ect and can't be disterbed there is another doc from the practice that has access to all of doc martin's records of patients and would probably not change meds without my doc but refills and questions are answered.

I think in the 6 years Iv'e been seeing him , I only had to call twice to talk to him one time. Otherwise, he calls between patients or after closing.

wow.

My old pdoc was absurdly responsive particularly since he knew I was so unlikely to initiate contact myself. He called me (unsolicited) far more frequently than I ever called him.

When I was trying to get in touch with my current pdoc to set up a first appointment, it took me several days to hook up with her. I was not used to this after pdoc #1. Since I don't care much for talking to these people on the phone anyway, I now use email. She checks her email every night, so it wouldn't work if I needed a more immediate response, but this is basically how I communicate with her if I need prescription refills, or if I have questions about any of the meds, or if I think we need to change my dosing amounts or schedule. It works very well for me.
