Let's Get Married

Posted by IsoM on November 13, 2002, at 1:10:58

No, I'm not sending out proposals to any one, but that's to be the topic for a PBS Frontline program to be seen on Nov 14, this Thursday. The reason I'm posting this info is my reaction to what one social scientist (James Wilson) said. In it, he says a lot more but his view "Marriage is a fragile institution, and unless you enforce it by social mechanisms, society becomes loose at the hinges."

I was appalled! Yes, I agree that failing marriages are a sad sign but the idea of "enforcing" it? What is there going to be? Marriage police? If something's not doing well, wouldn't it be better to look at the reasons why & try to correct things than to use force to keep it going? Even if it needs life support & is technically dead?

The burden for keeping marriages viable rests with each couple really, but if the government wants to help, enforcement is laughable.

Anyway, I hope some will watch the show & tell us here what they think. I know I'm going to watch it.

Hey Iso...

I'll watch for this program on my local PBS -- I really enjoy Frontline (did you happen to catch "Faith and Doubt At Ground Zero"?) It sounds like Wilson's comment is indicative of the conservatism that my country (the U.S.) is yet again battling. Ya know what, though? I still love it here. Anyway....I'll keep an eye out for the program; thanks for the heads up.

Iso,

You are beautiful and gifted and talented. I, on the other hand, am working on two hours of sleep, so when I first read the quote, I thought he really meant, "unless you REINFORCE it..."

Uh-oh. Someone's at the door. Gotta go. Oh, no! It's the Couple Cops!

Perhaps he did mean reinforce it. It would make more sense in context. I don't know about you, but I often have word substitution problems. Perhaps he did as well.

I hope there's many happy years ahead for you, Nikki! I'm single now for almost 6 years after being married for 24. I couldn't be happier. But I'm still a romantic idealist at heart & think a happy, loving marriage is one of life's greatest joys, just not for many, but am glad you & your husband are one of those wonderful couples. Congratulations!

Marriage can be elevating in human growth and then again it can be demoraralizing to those that have to suffer with a dead beat partner ..***FREEDOM *** is where its at , with or without a partner. Having ones own personality is plenty but living in todays marriage bylaws sucks. When your married and leave your social personality behind the human heart suffers sooner or later , thus maybe causing divorce. No way we can go without being social

Thanks for keeping me in the loop IsoM. Very kind of you. I so miss having clear reception of a large city PBS...we only get a smaller based, runs the big buck shows later, if at all kind of fuzzy PBS so I will look into having someone tape it for me.

Loved the links. Thanks so much.
