any suggestions?

Posted by Kari on October 21, 2002, at 13:51:19

Hi all,

Does anyone have any ideas about how to make an effective soundproof box out of simple materials?
Actually, anything which one can yell into without sound leaking out would be fine.
Funny question, I know :)
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Kari.

Friends of mine once made a soundproof room out of egg cartons. I believe the hollow side of the egg cartons has to be placed against the wall to form a barrier between the inside room and the outside room, but I don't know why.

Surely you can do a google search. Just type in "soundproofing a room." Here's what I got when I typed that:

"i've been involved in the music business for some time (not in the soundproofing business but recording). I've seen many types of soundproofing a solutions. Here are some.
1. Layering insulation between peg boards so the holes are staggered like brick work. don't compress the insulation too much. 2-3 layers are ideal. though you need to cover 'cause of the insulation. any fabric should do.
2. same method as above but filling it with foam. i have also seen news paper and such used as a filler.
3. you can actually buy sound board from local lumber shops/yards.
4. making baffles/barriers and placing them to direct sound will work too. they'll need to be around 6" thick with peg board staggered inside to trap sound. that's how staggered peg board works. sound travels into one hole has to move around to find another etc. thus loosing energy and stopping. the more peg board used the more it'll trap.

I hope this was somewhat helpful.

I imagine you could do this to the inside of a box so that you can scream into it (or torture rodents without their squeals giving them away, though I'd hope you're not doing that!) or whatever else you plan to do with it!

Your local forum science nerd to the rescue - ta da!!

How big a sound-proof box do you wish to make? That would influence the materials you choose.

A fairly small box can be made by lining it with the foam that's used in "egg crate" mattress pads like these:
http://www.domesticbin.com/IBS/SimpleCat/Product/asp/product-id/63488.html
All the small air pockets in the foam will absorb sounds & the corrugated "egg crate" design bounce the sound waves about till they're almost completely absorbed by the small air pockets. You need to make sure there's no cracks to let sound 'leak' through.

If you need to make a larger sound box, you can use the same idea but make two layers of foam with the corrugated layers facing, one inward & the other outward. You can also layer the inside with actual styrofoam egg cartons (only the corrugated halves) for extra sound bouncing.

Sounds like someone's helping their kids with a school science project?
