I ran across this and am curious what others think of it.

My initial reaction is not repulsion, but close to it... that word is too strong, so please don't take offense, I just can't think of another.

KK, without reading everything through on all the different pages, want to let us in on what bothers you about it? It seems a little cheesey to me but I haven't looked at it in that much detail.

It's very similar to the seminar I just attended (alternativementalhealth.com). I think- and I just glanced through it- it suggests a orthomolecular approach coupled with traditional pharmacology. I guess I don't see anything wrong with that, may I ask also what offends you on the site? Take care, judy

I didn't read that much of the info. What is it? Something about New Pope? I wouldn't sign on if my life depended on it. One year, did I read that right?
Is it a Catholic charity, I assume it is.
Surely Catholicism isn't teaching cures to mental illness.
Looks scarier than ECT.

I _like_ the idea of getting to the route of our 'brain chemistry' problems by studying our physiology.

If doctors had considered giving me a thyroid test 6 years ago, my hypothyroidism could've been discovered and treated. And I could have avoided the antidepressant treadmill.

In retrospect, the place seems like it has good intentions and god knows, most shrinks don't ask enough questions about lifestyle, etc.
It's a whole year, though?

You could easily lose more than a year of your life from being mistreated.

I really wish I had known about this approach when I was first diagnosed years ago.

antiseptic and scary...

I think that's what bothered me about it when i first glanced at it - looks like a place called "charter" school or housing, that was advertised in the 80's in the SW. It was a place parents sent their kids (phil hit it on the head) when they were being troublesome in their teens. that always freaked me out.

term there: yes, "Residents will participate in three graduated 4-month stages" - ahhh!!!!

odd comment on the site: "Tests for biochemical deficiencies and imbalances will be administered" - this can't be done yet, can it?

it's not Catholic, the picture of the Pope is there because the founders attended the "Congress on the Family and Integration of the Disabled, at the Vatican" - that seems a little misleading.

This comment also bothered me: "Son Could Benefit from New Hope -- My 26 year old son is diagnosed schizophrenic, has been in and out of hospitals for 14 years. Currently in state-supported halfway house near mother (divorced). Modest "life skills" program, but over-medicated, smoking environment with no nutritional component. I heartily agree that the first step toward recovery is to remove factors (smoking, etc.) known to make things worse.
Father, Silver Spring, MD"

Hold on here. We mentally ill are adults despite our diseases. Can you imagine what that son might feel when he goes into that sterile environment? Perhaps smoking helps his tremors. Perhaps it's a social thing. Perhaps it's something to look forward to.

I guess the hair on the back of my neck was raised because it seems like a prison (you have to live on-campus). Once they get you in there, you're there to stay. And no chocolate cake for dessert! ;)

Thanks for the replies - they were insightful.

yes, once I read the story about the daughter's 'behavior' i was a little freaked out. i was especially troubled by her being locked away for 2 days in restraints to 'detox.' i mean, a lot of her behavior would be normal in that situation.

spooky.

i actually believe in dietary restrictions for many things, incl. mental illness, and prefer to have the whole picture looked at. this place just bothered me.

i saw a special where a child's seizures were reduced simply with diet changes.

There seems to be quite a bit of doubt associated with multiple chemical allergies or whatever. That's what bothered me, also.
Some of those folks, not all, are just plain nuts.
I would go crazy at that place..bad vibes.

Why can't they do what they do in 3 months. That's enough time to get your message across. One year...brainwashed.
