I went on a shopping spree... / weight BCP?

Posted by sid on May 5, 2002, at 13:58:21

... and it feels good!

My old clothes don't fit anymore! I thought I'd lose weight and wear all these nice clothes again, which I intend to do, but in the meantime, I've been wearing old, ugly, baggy stuff and frankly, it did not help me feel good about myself at all. My students are better dressed than I was. So I went to buy summer clothes - nothing fancy, all useful and easy to mix and match, and I feel good about it. Plus, I made sure I'd still be able to wear that stuff as I lose weight, or that I can easily alter the new clothes myself.

Anyhow, I guess I've got some shopaholic in me. Although it's a one stop thing for me. There's this one shop where I usually find my clothes, and I usually buy everything there. It feels great to treat myself this way, thank God I don't shop often! I'm not crazy about clothes shopping, and the salespeople know it too. I shop about twice a year for clothes, so I get great service when I go - they know I'll get out of there with a lot of things.

Oh well. Aren't I superficial today? It feels good at times though. The weather is a bit nicer here (eastern Canada - summer not in site yet), and I was getting worried about what the heck I'd be wearing in the coming weeks.

About my weight: I'm wondering if the pill isn't part of the problem. I've gained 30 lbs about the same time I started taking the pill to help with acne and PMS. I have major oedema (water retention), that's for sure. Any thoughts on this?

Good for you on your shopping spree!!

Back in olden days I worked at a clinic where birth control was the primary focus. Back then, yes, the pill was linked to weight gain but more in the "it can increase your appetite" way. I don't know if they still talk about that as a bcp side effect. However, I am a true believer that meds can cause weight gain in and of themselves. Ie, without the increase in appetite.

If you are on any psycho meds, they are famous for weight gain. So that plus bcp could add up.

I would ask someone knowledgeable about the edema (oh, yeah...that's probably why you posted...duh). That may not be so good if it's a regular thing, and not due to being on your feet all day or something.

However, it sounds like you are young enough to get some of it off without massive effort (like walking 3 times a week will take it off). After 40 or so, that doesn't seem to happen anymore. (Anybody know why? Metabolism drops to that of a hippo?)

Sid:

The pill's a biggie, but it's probably any ADs you're on. That's the biggest culprit, at least in my experience. I've just lost 10 pounds with Weight Watchers; I have ten to go. I bought myself this great pair of Ralph Lauren jeans yesterday, some Willi Wear shorts, and some funky undies from TJ Maxx. Today I got myself two pairs of shoes, one lime green, one white, at Value City. Shopping is fun. I do it a little too regularly, though. Glad you're able to control yourself.

And it's also good that you have decided to let yourself look better. I used to wear sweats all the time to hide my weight, but it really only made me look like I didn't care about my appearance, and then I was even more depressed.

Remember the words of Billy Crystal's Fernando Lamas (????): Looking good is better than feeling good.

I'm on Effexor XR (EXR) but I gained the 30 lbs before I started it. I lost 7 lbs the first I took EXR but I gained it since. I did not gain more though. I really took the 30 lbs when I started taking the pill. I also moved and started a new job at the time, so the pill may not be the culprit.
I need to lose weight now since I'm almost 35 and yes, my metabolism is approaching that of a hippo. :-)
shar: the edema started when I gained the 30 lbs and started taking BCP. Not sure if the weight or the pill is to blame. In any case, I need to lose the weight, so... I started really checking what I eat this week. And I eat less too.
Good for you, beardedlady, those green shoes sound lovely!

I think Fernando said something like:

"Dahling, it's beter to look good than to feel good..."

(Just for the record...)

Thanks for the exact words. I didn't use quotation marks so I could get away with paraphrasing. But you look mah-velhous anyway.

sid,
Good for you for shopping!! Your post made me laugh because I'm about to go on a shopping spree myself. Pretty much for the same reason (you and I have traded weight gripes before...I gained 30 lbs on Celexa, went off it and am on Effexor) as you. I've lost half of the 30 or so pounds I gained but still can't fit in to my old "skinny" clothes...so I've been wearing sweats and t-shirts and stuff like that. Recently I bought a pair of pants in my new enlarged (but hopefully shrinking) size and I feel even more inspired to lose the weight!
