SMALL I: GRACIE 2

Posted by beardedlady on April 10, 2002, at 5:42:15

I didn't want to wreck Sar's memory thread, so I'm posting a little note here. I wrote with the small I for most of my life. In the circles I've travelled (poetry and art, mostly), that small i is not usually a flag but an affectation. I used it for about ten or fifteen years and only recently abandoned it in my poetry and my regular writing. I think it was about the time I started teaching and thought I should set an example.

Many of my friends (lots of teachers and poets) do their e-mails without the caps. I never really looked at it as is the person writing felt he or she were unimportant, since these are all folks whose egos are sometimes unable to fit in the room together!

Anyway, that's my take on the small I.

I am familiar with e.e. cummings so it did cross my mind that the small "i" did not necessarily mean anything. However, in handwriting, to write one's name in smaller letters than the surrounding words - which is of course done subconsciously - does usually mean that the writer suffers from low self-esteem. So I thought prehaps the small "i" might have been used in a similar fashion in type, as the rest of her post was, as far as I can remember, grammatically correct. Of course you are right, this might merely have been an affectation.
I certainly didn't mean to ruin the thread, I only pointed this out because of the vain hope that there was some indication that the poster is feeling particularly low and in need of help. While there is a vast limit to what any of us can do for another member, many posters are quite liberal with their advice and support. If only we could be so kind to ourselves!
