BEARDY: question 4 U:

Posted by Janelle on April 5, 2002, at 20:41:16

Based on Lou's info and an Internet search I did (Yay, I DID DO A SEARCH MYSELF!) I now know much about Stanley Milgram.

HOWEVER, what does he have to do with that post further above where you said in my defense, thank you (to Lou about me) "she's not Stanley Milgram" ???!!!! I'm curious as to what you meant by that! Thanks! :-)

Janelle;
I can't answer for Beardy as to why she said that you were not S. Milgram. But I remember him from the trial of Adolf Eichman. Adolph Eichman was a Nazi war criminal that was hunted down and kidnapped by the Isrealies in South America in about 1960 where he had fled prosecution and was brought to justice for his war atrocities.
Now I have also been trying to make some kind of connection with either Milgram or Eichman as to your survey. Your survey did not mention jews nor did you know of me. Thearfor, it is possible that Beardy was referring to Milgram's experiments with shocking people that gave wrong answeres. Actually, he only pretended to shock them and actors were used to make people believe that subjects wre given huge doses of electricity.
Another possible explanation is that Beardy was referring to your survey as "shocking". But this is too far-fetched of an explanation even on Psycho-Babble.

The Milgram Comparison » Janelle

It's not as convulated as as others might be implying. I think it's pretty obvious.

You were simply innocently asking for other's observations & experiences to make a comparison with your own - helping you to understand the nature of depression & the support system people have & how it affects their ability to lead their lives. It's human nature to be curious of how other people compare to us.

I saw innocent curiousity only & felt no pressure or 'ulterior motives' in your asking, just as Dr. Bob indicated; there was no pressure. Those people who didn't feel like sharing (such as myself) simply didn't offer.

Milgram exerted pressure on the teachers (& others) to do something under duress that they didn't really want to do. You didn't exert any pressure on us. Milgram did his research under false pretenses. There's NO pretense in your asking us.

Don't worry, Janelle. Your question really didn't offend anyone, or if it did, I'm sure they mistook your reasons for asking.

Janelle,
I think she was saying--in a kidding way--you were not gonna hurt people. That the survey you proposed was not going to traumatize anyone--in other words, you were not proposing something extreme that could damage others. Yours was an innocent, straightforward survey and not based in some kind of ungood intent.

Lou:

I think it's a good idea that we let the person being asked the question answer it, okay? That way, the person can clear it up before others take a stab add it and add to the confusion.

Thanks.

Beardy;
What is your explanation of your title,
"For heaven's sake! She is not Stanley Milgram"?

Beardy;
Could you post again "For heaven's sake!--SM" on the ADMINASTRATION BOARD? Then I can answer your post and this "shocking" situation will be grounded.
Thanks,
Lou
