New Here

Posted by DedeD on April 3, 2002, at 20:41:59

Hello, everyone,
I'm new here, and kind of nervous. I'm not sure how to act, what the right thing to say is. So I'll just introduce myself. My name is Dee. I've been diagnosed BiPolar for about a year. By the way, what is the difference between BiPolar and BiPolar ii? I saw that on the psycho-babble board. I didn't know there were types. I recently just dumped my Depakote medication because I gained 54 pounds and my hair was falling out. My doc replaced it with Lithium. I'm 40 years old and this is my second semester in college. Surprisingly, I'm pulling A's and B's. It's hard to focus with some of the meds I'm on. I work in a degrading job at a movie theatre, but that's just until I graduate school or find something better that will accomodate my school hours. I share a home with my widowed mom (we have fun), 3 dogs, 2 cats and 11 ferrets. Okay, so we're the crazy animal ladies who live down the block. We don't care. Everyone's healthy and well taken care of. Anyway, that's me in a nutshell (pun intended). Nice to meet you all. Dee

Dede D;
I extend my welcome to you to the community of Psycho-Babble. It is like living in a pleuristic neighborhood with all types of people. So if you have a neighbor that helps you start your car, you will find one here. If you have a neighbor that has a loud car, you will find one here. If you have a neighbor that likes what you like, you will find one here. If you have a neighbor that is in need of help, you will find one here. But the most people in this neighborhood are lovely, for it is always a lovely day in the neighborhood at Psycho-Babble.
Lou

Hi Dee

How did you develop an attraction to ferrets?? Did you inherit this from your Mom or did she just finally capitulate?

There are lots of Bipolars here who can answer your questions alot better than I can. In terms of the Board, just please feel that you can jump in wherever and whenever you like. Welcome

Mair

What a wonderful way Lou described it! Your message is a very well-thought out introduction - SO nice. It almost feels like I can picture you. I love "crazy" animal people as I'm one myself but am limited to 3 cats. If I had my way, I'd own a menagarie instead.

Welcome, welcome, welcome!

Well, I moved down here to FL when my dad started to really get sick. He passed away last April. I had 10 ferrets at the time. They were my family and I wasn't giving them up. I got them through shelters that I had done volunteer work at in New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. They are all hard to adopt ferrets, blind, deaf, biters, in need of meds, surgical candidates. I have the word sucker stamped on my head. It's in neon. Fortunately mom is an animal lover, too. She even allowed me to get my chihuahua after I moved here. What a pain in the ass HE is, but loveable just the same. The cats are mom's, I can give or take them. The other two dogs were here when I got here (2 labs, lean mean eating machines). It also doesn't help that my sister is the assistant manager of a pet store and I get 40% off AND I get first crack at any ferret returns. I also think that my ferret collection is part of my illness because I was living alone all that time and needed to nurture and be loved. Animal hoarding IS a disease. I just used the excuse that they needed me.

Seen lots of ferrets & held a few, but I think a major drawback of owning one (or many) is their short lifespan. I've read from 4-7 years & up to 6-10 years. I'd feel devastated if a pet I loved died after a few years. I don't know if I could handle that.

I'm curious how the cats of your Mom gets along with your ferrets. Do they tend to ignore each other? Were either set of animals around others of the opposite species before? And are your ferrets completely loose, or do they prefer to spend time in their cages too?

one of my favorite indigo girls songs, this is paraphrased:

then you had to bring up reincarnation, over a couple of beers the other night

now i'm serving time for mistakes made by another in another lifetime

how long til my soul gets it right

has any human being ever reached that kind of light?
