She's a little country-ish, and I am not a fan of country music, but I heard her on NPR and thought she was great. She has this fab song about the two white pigs who dragged the black man to death--"Pink Sweater" I think it's called. Anyway, the poets and poetry appreciators should check her out; the lyrics to many of her songs are beautiful.

I apologize for busting in here. The other singer Wendy was referring to is Lorena McKennit (sp?) not McKenna. She sings some very beautiful and sometimes haunting Celtic music that I love but that is much despised, unfortunately, by everyone else in my family. My spouse complains that he, too, would be depressed like me if he listened to her music. ...sigh

Dinah - you might check out an album (I know the use of this word dates me) called the "Mask and the Mirror" or something like that. She's got several CDs out, but I think this one is my favorite. I tend to listen to things repetitively. I've gone for weeks at a time where I listened to almost nothing else.

Loreena McKennitt is astounding! I have all her CDs except one & I love them. With musical artists, there's generally a few songs that I don't like of theirs, but with Loreena, I love everyone of her works. She is very talented & has the most lovely ethreal voice to suit her music. I'm a big fan of Celtic music & hers is one of the best examples of where it can be taken to.
If you go to this site (it's the flash-free one), you can d/l sound clips so as to make an informed opinion of her music.

Well, this is hardly fair! Here I post asking folks who are interested in good lyrics if they'd ever heard of Lori McKenna, and now everyone is talking about Lorena McKennit. I mean, billions of people listen to country music (I am not even one of them!); it's the most popular style of music in the country--maybe the world (though I don't like it). Yet someone comes on my thread and says Celtic music, which most people despise (except me and a handful of others), and everyone flocks to that.
Did anyone check out Lori McKenna's site? No. They all went to Lorena McKennit.
The world just ain't fair.

Well, I, for one, checked out Lori McKenna! Sorry to say but she didn't do much for me. I dislike country in a MAJOR way but will remain open-minded so I do listen to new performers to see what I think. Didn't go over big this time either.
And hey!! Who says Celtic music is despised? Put your dukes up, we're going to have a fisticuffs over this! ;-)

You know what it is? It's NPR. Any time I hear a group or a singer on NPR, I go out and buy the CD because I fall in love with the thought behind the music. I have not bought Lori yet, because I really hate country music. Really hate it. I'm still debating. I know if I got it I would listen to it once and then put it away.
I like to turn the music way up in my car, but it has to be really cool music. If anyone else heard that coming from my car, I'd be embarassed.
But I discovered Voices on the Verge and Anne Sofie vonOtter on NPR, and I like them both. Hmph. I'm bored. (I must be boring.)
