Mathematics

Hey,

How many people here are good at math ? Apparently us depressed folk are lacking something in the brain that gives people the ability to solve math problems.

I heard this on a news report earlier.

So that explains why I've always been so crap at math. I hated that subject soooooo much at school!!!!

Who said math? Math has always been one of my passions. I still enjoy it but when I became ill as my mother said, "she lost her numbers!"

I'm still okay but my mental calculations aren't reliable anymore and I'm much slower. Answers to more complex questions just aren't there anymore.

At this moment in time, I'm not depressed or anxious but still my ability to learn is stumped. I really wish these reasearchers could come up with something more ingenious.

That was my favorite subject until I started to have bad depressive episodes and hypomanias...then I became somewhat interested in philosophy of mathematics and couldn't do the mechanics any more worth a damn. Is there anybody out there that can *easily* explain the difference between the rationalists and the intuitionists?

Jane, I'm a whiz at math IF I can just do math & not have to change mental gears for other things. My oldest son has depression & can do math in his sleep, I swear. He's going for a minors in math with his Bachelor's.

So much for that news report after reading the other answers too.

I'm pretty good at it, and I love it. I'm a woman too, so I guess I am a statistical outlier. I do research using a lot of math and I teach grad classes that are math-filled and challenging. I must say I had trouble though during major depression, but now I am better and better at it. It took longer to finish my PhD because it took so long to remember things and to figure things out - also my motivation was pretty low at times.

brain exercise ! » Willow

I think the brain is like a miuscle... if you don't exercise it it atrophies. As we get older we are not in school anymore, so we learn less, exercising the brain less. In some way, I was lucky to be in grad school during my major depression because I was forced to continue using my brain a lot, even though it was much harder. I don't think I am back to my top shape yet, but there has certainly be an improvement since my major depression. And I think it'll continue, or at least I hope so. Take a class (a math class? why not !), exercise your brain, you could be surprised at how it can bounce back after some efforts. My 2 cents.

I'm right-handed too. Have abilities in math, spatial abilities (drawing things in 3-D not a problem) and have abilities in languages as well and arts. Very bad at sports. Kind of like Lisa Simpson. Similar family dynamics too. lolololol

Well, I've got some Homer in me too, cause I tend to eat too much, although I prefer chocolate to doughnuts.
