Get-together in New Orleans May 6?

Posted by Dr. Bob on March 22, 2001, at 21:22:28

Hi, everyone,

I'm going to be in New Orleans for the big psychiatry meeting, May 5-10, and wonder if anyone would be interested in an informal social get-together during that time. Probably the weekend would be most convenient? I'm tied up Saturday all day and Sunday in the morning, so maybe Sunday afternoon? Lunch or an afternoon snack? Someone else would need to handle all the logistics (where, what time, etc.)...

Dr.B. - I'd love to, but can't find a drug company to sponsor me, yet. Maybe I can take a pdoc's place if they cancel :)

A social get-together with cyber-friends sounds like a great idea. For myself I would have to plan a year in advance because of finances and family obligations. We should take a vote on a city and time of year. Perhaps we could consider a city in Canada because the exchange rate would be favourable for our American cousins?

Toronto in 2006? Is that far enough in advance? :-)

Include myself in, though I wonder if I'll still be in contact with the board? I'm doing so well with the effexor that I think with time the support needed will probably wither. :0

My husband and myself haven't been away on our own in years and the New Orleans sounded like a real fun long weekend get away. Any suggestions for an American city for next year? : )

"Philadelphia?"

When? And is there anything interesting there for tourists?

"To coordinate with the APA?"

What is APA? american psychiatric association? I don't know if I would want to be in a town with at the same time as a hundred psychiatrists. (Nothing personal, Boss! :-)

The "psycho-babble" group meeting would be a seperate thing, right?

Uh oh. Last year when my shrink went to the 'big meeting', I felt totally abandoned and got hypomanic. So thanks for the dates- he hasn't told me yet- at least I know I'll be feeling really good the 1st week of May. Have a great trip- judy

It would say when at that APA link I posted. As far as what to do, I bet you could find some information online. :-)

It's up to you, but there are presentations you might find interesting...

If Anyone would be interested in meeting in New Orleans May 6 I have checked on a few things. . Airfare from my area (Orlando) Cheapest Southwest $138.00 roundtrip. I am not finding ANY hotel vacancies in the downtown convention Center area for that time, may need to go out of the area. Sounds like the best time to meet with Dr. Bob would be lunch or snack as he has indicated in his post, most likely in the convention center, or downtown area (fun). If anyone else is interested keep posting. If I see there is an interest we can take it from here if you would all like me to coordinate I can do that. Let's do this one thing at a time.

If this fits into anyone's plans. Lexie

I'm in Houston, so New Orleans isn't too far to drive and the airfare is pretty cheap too. Anyone else in Texas interested in going?

As for a place to stay, what about the "bed and breakfast" type places?

Hey all. Might be a really bad time to try to meet in the Big Easy because not only is the psych convention taking place, but it is also the second weekend of the Jazz and Heritage festival, quite possibly the largest festival of its kind in the U.S. Hotel vacancies are going to be really scarce, and if available, very expensive. Don't want to rain on the parade, but it's the truth. Good luck!

Thanks for the info, I wasn't sure what was going on. Looks like I might just be staying in Orlando. I would like to see us be able to get together. If this is it, than I agree with the others lets make it another time.

Dr. Bob, Any plans on Orlando? I would be willing to plan something for the Central Florida area, I am from Central Florida.

That will make it harder in terms of lodging, but OTOH it might make it more fun... :-)

Sorry, geography's not my specialty, is Ft. Lauderdale central? I'm going to be there for a telemedicine meeting in early June:

But I don't know yet exactly when that weekend I'll be getting in...

No. Ft. Laud. is southeast Florida just north of Miami. Hours and hours away.

I am only a 3.5 hour drive from Ft. Lauderdale and you can count me in if there is enough interest I will plan this one. We would be planning far enough in advance.

I read the information. The meeting is June 3-6 Sunday through Wednesday. Registration for you doesn't begin until 5:30 p.m., If a group of us were able to get together, Lunch, snack or a picnic on the beach you would need to let us know what fits your schedule. Plenty of time for that. First things first.... Who wants to go to Ft. Lauderdale? The beaches are beautiful, and there are lots of fun things to do. Let me know. Lexie

Hey, all. BTW, I will be in New Orleans that weekend, but my primary focus is going to be Jazzfest. If anyone will be there, including you, Dr. Bob, I'll be quite happy to meet you at Cafe DuMonde for a late breakfast. Nothing like beignets and coffee to start your day. Laissez les bon temps roulez!

Sorry, but I'm involved with a course all morning, and then I think I have a meeting during lunchtime...

Dammit! Just started reading this thread today... May 6th is my birthday! I would love to 'roulez' avec vous during mardi gras and at the jazzfest. Alas, no money anyway, so it's not going to happen.

Viva la musica!

Well, hey, bonne anniversaire...or as they say in England, happy birthday! Too bad you can't make it. Music is my favorite therapy - nothing like a good groove to get that energy moving and shake out the accumulated psychic merdre. Well, enjoy your day, Wendy. If anyone else is going to be there, the beignets are on me. Peace and love.

That course and that meeting coincided, so lunch or an afternoon snack would in fact have been doable. Oh, well. Ft. Lauderdale, anyone?
