You're afraid of authority, hon. You suckered up to DB so fast I felt my head spinning around, Linda Blair fashion.
Plus, you lied about DB, which you didn't clarify in the same post, which you should've done right away. It's okay to kid about something like that as long as you've made it clear that you WERE kidding. I am surprised that DB let you get away with that.

You have about thirty seconds to be mortified and embarrassed and then you really ought to look inside, hard. Like we ALL do at times, I'm not excluding myself at all at all.

You guys might be better off staying away from the subject of DB ... otherwise you had quite the exchange going. Next time you get on a good subject like this one, keep DB out of it, maybe?

Aw, I think peoples are being a little harsh on Toph here. I figure Toph was expecting a light-hearted response like

'well last time I was having a chat to Dr B about you he told me that...'

Oh, I can't think of anything funny at the moment.

But he did fess up soon as he saw that the joke was missed. He probably felt a bit like the schoolteacher had just come into the room and saw him writing rude words on the blackboard when Dr B decided to contribute to the thread!

But I really do think it was a joke peoples.
A joke that badly misfired.
I bet Toph finds it funny when Atticus rarks Dr. B up - I mean who doesn't, really? But I don't think he meant to poke fun at Atticus at all (he seemed to be quite a lot in awe of you Atticus) and I think that he must be feeling quite a bit horrid at the moment.

((((Toph)))))

You're both right. I meant to poke fun at Bob and poked myself in the eye. The dumb part was that by making an obsurdity about Bob I came out as the absurd one. Now it seems I have hurt my credibility which will take some time to restore I'm afraid. I think I am the person you know me to be. Although sometimes I do lie to myself about being OK.

I really appreciate your support. It seems every time I've offended someone here it was playing the wise@ss, short on wise, long on @ss.

Toph,

I can't find the offending post. If you've given it a proper burial I just wanted to pay my respects.

I never pass up the chance to whip a dead horse - or to mix metaphors - shoot myself in the foot, put my foot in my mouth, spill my guts, destroy the village to save it, fall on my sword, and, like you, paint myself into a corner.

Some mornings I discover my drunken postings and feel like I'll never live them down. No matter how I squint at them, or what spin I put on them, I just can't repair the damage.

When I read the line about Dr Bob emailing you, I laughed out loud. I knew it was a joke, since just getting Bob to reply to mail is hard enough, without actually having Bob proactively mail us and asking us to make queries on his behalf. Toph, you write with dry humor, and sadly that type sometimes misses the mark. This happens to me too, and I have had also felt that awful regret.

It's very sad to see that Atticus was hurt by this event. I hope time will help change his current opinion.

I hope you both feel lighter soon.

verne,
You've been someone who has come to by defense on more that this occasion, do you owe me some money that I have forgotten about? In an act of continuing self-flagilation, here is where I suffered a severe brain cramp:

Thank you for your comments, em. Humor, dry or otherwise, is really only humor if it's humorous. I'm afraid in this case I wasn't very funny. This need to be the clown goes so far back into my childhood. I'm afraid it's too late to change this way of dealing with insecurities I have. All I can hope for is better discretion on what I say and to whom. I hate it when people are disappointed in me, even people I don't know.

Toph,

I didn't see any problem with your post. Perhaps I need to get my PC filters examined. Got a bad case of emissions, clouds brain, leads to confusion and I hide in the crawlspace. The only thing worse is to drink 17 whiskies at the White Horse Tavern and die of alcoholic insult to the brain. Sadder yet, the widow writes a book "Left Over Time to Kill".

Did you see the movie "Crawlspace" that came out in the late 70's or early 80's? I think it had Arthur Kennedy in it. A disturbed individual takes up residence in a family's crawlspace. Very compelling. Like Kafka's story - pick any really - our brother is a bug or we have someone living in our crawlspace.

verne,

I know you can spin some fables but I can be a little naive and thick sometimes. The orkin website is really not what it seems then? How do you know that I don't need a little diazinon? Well I don't. It's like some movie where someone gets into a jam and an angel whispers a truth into their ear which saves the day. A little creepy but useful nonetheless. Thanks.

I don't understand. I don't know about "orkin". I'm unfamiliar with diazinon. And I don't know how my previous supportive posts solicted this response.

When others misunderstood you I tried to help. I didn't expect or want any reward. Instead I get this and babblemail suggesting I had somehow "admonished" you - which couldn't be further from the truth.

From now on, I will not post to you, refer to you, or otherwise comment on "anything" you post. You will then have no reason to babblemail me with accusations or be offended.

OK, verne.

I thought your post above was cryptic. I tried to reply cryptically. I became worried that I misunderstood your post so I babblemailed you to see what was going on. You go public that I am some sort of bad guy. Fine, I guess I am a bad guy for misinterpreting your post. I'm sorry, I'll be OK. I'm getting practice with these sorts of reactions to me.

Sorry I was Harsh

Toph,

I never suggested you were a "bad guy".

I'm not comfortable with explaining and reexplaining what I write. Or having to defend myself because someone took it the wrong way.

If I seem cryptic to you, let it go. At least don't assume I had bad intentions (as in, "I thought you were admonishing me", or as you now write, "you go public that I am some sort of bad guy").

I finally blew a fuse when you thought every other post I made was somehow about you or directed at you. I'm sorry I wasn't more patient but this really triggered something in me.
