Looking for a therapist

Posted by Angela2 on February 3, 2015, at 20:04:59

I am looking for a therapist. I have a therapist at a clinic. If I didn't need medication i would quit there sooner. She's Ok. But anyway, I...I am thinking I might need trauma therapy a little. Just the word. Trauma. Hurts. A lot. I don't want to wallow in it. I want to move forward. But yeah. I feel kind of sick right now. But I know it will pass.

Can you ask your current therapist for some recommendations? Or your primary care doctor? Friends? I found both my therapists by going on my insurance company's website, then interviewing several people. Time-consuming and expensive but well worth the trouble. A few of my friends have found therapists by going to one of my therapists, on my recommendation and that has work out well.

I agree with baseball's suggestions. My current T was a refferal within a practice - who specialises in Trauma.

Hi Baseball, it's funny, she (my current t) hasn't really offered, though she knows I'm looking for someone new. My plan is to stay at the clinic to get my meds and get support from my current t, but to also find someone else. And guess what, I found someone. Psychology Today has a therapist search. Anyway, I hope I like her. I think I probably will but we will see. I see her next week.

Thanks, yeah it is a good idea. I belong to an agency that serves the mental health population, and they said they can give me a referral to this other clinic. I wasn't sure if they meant someone specific or just a referral to the clinic. I should probably ask. I think I'm ok right now too though. For now anyways. It's good to know I have options.

This past week, I've found myself really uncomfortable with feelings that have come up..and have been like "I want to get better NOW!" I am feeling ok right now though. yay.

Thanks both of you.

So glad you found a T. I think it's the hardest "fit" in the world, more than Goldilocks trying to find the Just Right bed, or bowl of oatmeal.

I've been particularly depressed lately, so I'm sorry my post isn't timely. Divorce stuff.

Thanks Clearskies.

Don't worry about how frequently you are here. I like to see you but understand when you're not. Hugs.

It's funny. Sometimes I don't want to leave the clinic. But I talked to my therapist there, and I have been there for 5 years. We both agreed, that it might be a good idea to switch, or leave. It was a very nice conversation. I am now looking for a p-doc, since I am seeing a therapist I like. They won't discharge me until I have everything squared away. I rather like this transition. Change is scary. But I think it will be Ok.

So good to see you making these changes because YOU want to make it better. Very powerful.
