Can you talk to him (her?) about it? If you haven't, you should try. If he can't deal with your feelings, you should find another doctor. If he can, you should talk to him until it loses some of its sting. This can be hard and painful, but working it through with a good therapist who can handle these emotions can be really transformative.

Hi Angie,

I've lucked out and never experienced this, but I think if you're comfortable telling him, you should let him know. I know some people who have posted here have experienced strong feelings for their doctor or therapist, I hope some of them can help you out. I think it's pretty normal to develop feelings for someone you've seen for seven years.

Keep us posted on how you're doing.

I have been in love with my t for over 10years....i discussed it with him years ago. Somehow, I have found a way to live loving someone who isn't available.....verrry long story; if you would like more details you can pm me (not sure you can do this here) or: carleton@oakland.edu

Feelings aren't right or wrong, they simply are

P.S. Unfortunately my t returned my feelings, and I will share that if you wish.

There's so much I could write. I was in love with 2 of my therapists. The first therapy, 10 years, ended in part because I didn't say anything. The second therapy, 6 years, ended because she moved, but beforehand I told her what she meant to me, and after talking about it for many sessions I was able to face reality better.

I really feel for you. It's a difficult life when you love someone who is unavailable. Sassyfrancesca, I would like to hear your story too...

I was so in love with my psychiatrist that I could barely stand it. It wasn't erotic love. More like a child feels toward a parent. But it consumed me. I talked to him about it a lot. I had too. I couldn't see him without telling him how much I loved him. Sometimes I thought I would die from unrequited love.

But he and I talked about it over and over and over again. He encouraged me to see another therapist for DBT and I talked to her about it and that actually helped quite a bit, because just he and I talking about he and I had gotten pretty solipsistic.

It took me a long time to work through this. Seven or eight years. I now see him every 6 weeks. I don't really need to see him, but I still love him so much that I don't want to end the relationship until he ends it by retiring (he's 75). But it's no longer painful for me. I love him and I love seeing him and always leave his office on a cloud.

I hope this is your outcome. To be able to love your doctor without pain and while acknowledging the limits of the relationship.

Why not just tell him? Its not doing you much good sitting on the feelings. What's the worst that could happen? Oh, he could reject you and turn you away as a patient, but I like to think he's the humane type. Would it hurt to find another doctor?

What if he likes you back? This seems like a much harder question to answer.
