Major depression: symptoms

Posted by rnny on March 24, 2010, at 16:03:45

If you have experienced major depression, what have been your symptoms. I am stunned I could be in the throws of a major depressive disorder and "not know". But it is true. I was in a major depression for years and didn't know. I find that hard to believe but I know it is true because I am talking about myself. I justified the symptoms as "this is my lot in life to feel this way" and so on. I had no idea I had a medical problem. And I was like that for years. My hygiene was not appropriate, my eating habits, my sleep and I had zero motivation in addition to self isolation and self loathing. Sadly, no one even noticed. Our family is estranged. If you have experienced major depression, what did you experience? What took place that you knew you had a problem a doctor could help you with? Did it take a long time for you to realize you had a medical problem?

Well I've had major depression and believe me, I knew. I couldn't rouse myself to do the slightest thing, felt horrible all the time, cried constantly, had constant thoughts of suicide, hated my life. I think with severe depression, you FEEL very unhappy in addition to letting things go. Just letting self-care issues go is probably not as severe, so you don't feel despairing.

rnny, what prompted your realization? And how are you doing with it?

I have my story to tell--but I'm curious about yours if you feel like sharing it.

Best to you.
