Personal Coach

Posted by Kath on October 22, 2008, at 19:55:43

My therapist recently asked me if I was interested in having the name & # of her colleague, who is a personal coach & who is doing an internship to get further certification. As a result, she's offering personal coaching at a hugely hugely reduced price, because she needs to have worked with a certain # of people. ($25/month for 3 - 3/4 hour sessions) - with preferrably a committment of at least 3 months.

I wasn't interested at first. My concept of a personal coach was someone who you talked with about certain goals & then did a phone check as to how many times you'd gone running, or eaten balanced meals - or whatever you'd decided you needed to do.

WELL - am I surprised! I've had a short introductory session (she does a lot of her work over the phone. We're in Ontario, Canada & she said a lot of her clients are in the U.S.). Then today we did what is called a "Discovery". The coaching in my case, is going to be about where I want my life to go...who AM I? What part of myself is serving me well & what part isn't...that type of thing.
Part of what came up is that I want to be strong & grounded. I want to be unshaken by stuff that happens around me. I want to be able to enjoy life instead of endure it. Things like that.

I am realy blown away. She has a background as a social worker, so I guess that's a real benefit. I don't even know how to describe it. I feel like this might be pretty life-changing. I feel a little scared as well. She said (in better words) that due to my attitude & openness & willingness to 'go with it' - that she can see me really benefitting big-time from this. She said that the type of coaching that she does is, I think she said 'interactive'. She said it can go however deep the client wants it to. When I mentioned something about my Inner Child being pretty close to the surface, in that I'm very often aware of how that Part of me feels/what 'she' wants, etc...she said something like, 'by all means, bring her along for the ride. The way I work, I am dealing with the Whole Person - ALL parts of the person'.

WOW. When I got off the phone, I was thinking "I didn't even realize someone like this existed! This is better than a therapist for me" (although my therapist is very good).

Anyway, I'm excited about it & wanted to bring it here.

:-) Kath

There are therapists who work along those lines as well. But it is more directive than most, I agree.

You *do* have a positive attitude, and I can definitely see that this might be something helpful to you. I hope you keep us up to date on how it's going for you. :)

I will let you know, Dinah. Or I should say, it's my intention to!! LOL How's that for a cop-out.

hugs, Kath

PS - maybe it isn't a cop-out. Maybe it's me taking good care of myself by not putting pressure on myself. My Inner Child has a big "But you SAID!!!!!" thing!! She stands there with her feet firmly planted, toes pointing in a bit; hands on hips & says "But you SAID!" Last Group Therapy session I was working on something & our leader always reminds those who need it to uncross their legs - feet on floor - when doing work. So I was starting to talk & the feet were on the floor, but the minute I'd start to get into something, in would point the toes!! She did it with her feet & said, "What's THIS!!" & smiled.

I said I felt like a little kid. Some really good work came out of it. A few times during the process, in would go the toes & she'd mirror it, smiling.

:-) Thx for your kindness & support Dinah. It means a lot to me.

luv, Kath

Good for you for taking care of yourself!

That's something an inner kid can be really good at helping us with.

I like it that I'm so in touch with mine? Are you with yours?

:-) Kath

PS - before I understood as much about IC stuff, I could get very confused if I wanted to do something and DIDN'T want to at the same time!

Well, I think I'd better avoid terms like "inner child". My emotional self does not like age references. And rightly so I suppose. I'm very much in touch with my emotional self. (My therapist might carefully point out that my emotional self might seem a bit younger than my chronological age would indicate.)

Sorry. I'm rather age-sensitive these days, but in a different way I think.

It's totally idiosynchratic on my part. I know people use the term freely.

I know what that's like, and I think it was smart and proper to say what you needed to in order to avoid this becoming just one more emotional burden (however trivial it may sound). I try to discipline myself against making too many commitments that I carry around in my head and torture myself about not keeping, even long after the people I have supposedly let down have forgotten all about it. I need to try harder to avoid that, and I applaud your recognizing that about yourself!

Way Cool, Kath! I say go for it!!

My t calls himself a "life coach."

I have always said that my "inner child" always stayed on the outside!

My friends call me a "fairy-child"---Meaning I live in the moment on the edge, as it were.

I needed windshield fluid (only a few dollars), but instead I bought a halloween (fairy) costume!

Hugs, Sassy
