Therapist on vacation

Posted by mommy2angel on August 5, 2008, at 10:41:11

Hi,

I have been lurking for a while, but never signed up. My therapist is on vacation for two weeks and it is day 8 and I am having a hard time dealing with not being able to email or see him.

Welcome to Babble!
Lots of us understand how hard it is when a T takes any time off and disrupts our usual schedule. It's sad. The one thing I learned early on, or should I say, eventually, I learned she always returned and I could count on that. While she was gone we did several different things to help me get through. She'd write me a note to keep in my pocket, or she would leave me a voice mail to listen to while she was gone. I've taken something small from her office like a special rock or something to hold on to until she returned. It helped a lot.
Just some ideas you could use in future. Write here about your feelings. That can help you deal with the loneliness. You will get through this time. Sorry it's so lonely for you.

Welcome! I'm sorry that your T is away. I know how hard it is. Just think, though--you've made it through 8 days already! He'll be back before you know it.

Hi and welcome.

Day 8. You're over halfway there!

If you've been lurking for a while, perhaps you've seen some threads about Camp Comfort?

It's that time of year, maybe we should open it back up.

I'm not great at archive searching, but I think I found one of the earlier threads on the topic.

Enjoy your stay at Camp Comfort. Lots of company this month it would seem.

Welcome to Babble, mommy2angel.

It's pretty bad-- for us-- that our Ts go away. They do need the time off, and to get some release from the intensity of the work.

But for us-- when we come to depend on seeing them, not only the relationship, but the help they give us with our struggles-- it really pulls the rug out from under our sense of their reliability and solid presence.

I tend to count the days-- and it seems like forever-- especially toward the middle and until the very end. But the days do count down-- even if time seems to stop dead.

If you feel like talking about anything that's on your mind-- there are almost always people here who can identify and say insightful things.

I know it doesn't seem like it now-- but in a few days (I hate it when people say this to me, even when it's true--but it is true), your T will be back.

Hi Mommy2angel,

Welcome to babble! The issue you raise is a familiar one, as you can see from other posts. August is tough since most Ts take time off then. It does help to think about things you would have saved for your sessions with your T and maybe try posting them on the board for suggestions, comments or just plain support from others. Then at least you might not feel emotionally isolated by your T's absence. Please post more so we can learn more about you :)

Lucie
