knowing the right thing to say ...

Posted by Annierose on June 19, 2007, at 15:42:23

Lately, I've been in a good place in therapy and in life. When I'm in that place, it allows for the "hidden work" of therapy to emerge ... the hard stuff to surface (since I'm not battling any day to day demons).

So today in therapy, even though everything is fine and okay, I suddenly find myself wanted to crawl back into my childhood closet, where I often sought refuge as a child. I told my t that and she asked a few questions. I replied that when I'm in my closet, I sort of want to be left alone, but someone in this room keeps asking me questions!

My therapist knew just what to say, "Instead of thinking I'm trying to drag you out, think of me instead trying to join you in that closet. What's going on in the closet today?"

And that was just what I needed to hear. Sitting with me in that place was a pretty comforting and powerful feeling.

What a brilliant thing to say!!
So what was in the closet that you invited her to see and talk about?

I think that was great!

That was absolutely brilliant. I'm so glad you shared it with us.

Mine said something like that too, recently--"maybe it would be nice to have someone in there with you?"

Isn't that cool? That's what they all should be saying :)

What a nice moment between you. I can see how it would be so comforting.

What do you think was happening that you wanted to hide in the closet? And was it OK that she went in with you?

After so much angst this winter, I see your relationship getting stronger and stronger. You are both doing such great work.

Doesn't it just make you want to hug them. To me, it really is magic-- the best kind-- when someone is so close to you that they can say that.

There's something so right with the world when someone (especially a T) is right there with you-- and is able to feel intuitively and give us, just what we need.

It's so special. So glad that happened, annierose!

Thank you to everyone who posted and smiled along with me.

Scatchpad & Daisy asked why I wanted to be in my closet. That's a tough question ... sometimes sadness just wells up from within. After we talked about the sadness in therapy, she told me that when we can really get to that well and dig deep, I'll stop punishing myself. She also said something about projecting my anger onto others, blah, blah, blah ... she lost me somewhere in that line of thought ... but all in all ... I was comforted with her presence.

Part of my sadness came from Father's Day. My sister hosted my parents and invited all of my siblings but me. Ouch. Not that I would have gone, but still ...
