This is Depression

Posted by susan47 on October 1, 2006, at 16:58:20

Described as the inability to take pleasure in anything, it isn't something anyone can understand with their mind unless their mind is experiencing it or has done so. Even the memory of that depressive state can bring on another one, it seems .. and when in that state, all the depressions and all the negative feelings experienced in the past congregate, join together, and make life seem absolutely hopeless. Never mind tomorrow .. this Moment itself is not worth breathing for. This kind of depression is beyond any kind of describable pain.

Oh Susan, I'm sorry you are feeling so low. It is called state dependent learning. If you are in a certain emotional state then you are better able to remember all the times in the past when you have been in the same emotional state. When you feel happy you remember all the good times... But when you feel bad you remember all the bad times. And it starts to seem as though... The world always feels that way.

It doesn't Susan. But it can be hard to remember the good times. It can be hard to remember the good feelings. It can be hard to remember that the world doesn't always seem this way.

How is therapy going Susan?

Are you maybe numbing out because things have been a bit painful / hard? I don't know.

Take extra special care of yourself right now. Long bubblebath with a good book and some candles... A massage... Something nice for you.

I'm sorry you are feeling so sad :-(
I'll hold you for a bit and stroke your hair if it would help.
There there Susan
Life won't always feel this way
You are a wonderful, caring, loving, bubbly, vibrant person
And you are deep too Susan
Hang in there
Babblers will come and hold your hand.
You aren't alone.

Oh Susan, I know how awful this can be. I can't draw up any positive thoughts but it helps when my T reminds me that I have felt that badly before and then gotten better. I sort of have to take what she says as an article of faith because when I'm in that state, I think I'll never feel differently. I also think it's better for me just to "be" with my awful depression - not to ponder the ramifications of it, or analyze it, and certainly not to put any expectations on myself to beat it.

A thousand hugs to you.

Mair
