Its sort of interesting yet frightening......

Posted by muffled on February 2, 2006, at 15:08:03

how we tell all this 'stuff' to our T's.
And its all on paper.
And THEY own the paper, that has YOUR guts all over it.
But its theirs............
I once wrote to my T that I'm like a wolf with its underbelly exposed, but like a wolf, I got teeth, and I can twist around and use them if anyone f*cks with me.
So, this whole T thing is awful risky isn't it?
I mean really.
I guess when it comes down to it, she can hurt me but thats it.
Which is bad enough.
But I know where she lives! Ha!
Life is so freaking confusing and therapy relationship stuff doubly so.
Anybody else got thots on this?

I think it is scarey when looking at it that way. But I know my t didn't write anything down during our appointments, and she said she was horrible at summerizing.

I guess you have to trust that your t won't hurt you if their a good person.

And paper is paper, and paper can lie

It is scary to have "prove" out there about our deepest darkest thoughts and memories.
I am glad my T is very careful on what he puts in his notes. He said you never know what can happen, court cases, T dying, and you there are some things that should be kept private.

That's why trust is so important » muffled

I have asked, in the past, how detailed a T's notes are after a session. Whether someone else reading them would know EVERYTHING, or only a summary of what has come up. And I've read the notes from that T, too, by the way, which is another story...

The bottom line, though, is that that sort of thing is why trust is so very important to a therapeutic relationship. If you don't trust someone to have your records, is that someone you trust as a T? (Mind you, I'm not saying that a T won't take notes before trust is established, since that takes time, but during that time, you usually aren't spilling it all yet.)

That's my perspective, though, and it's colored by my own experiences with this issue.

have u asked what's in the notes? i think sometimes they write enough to cover their *sses, but not enough to hurt us if, like racer said, the records got into court, or something happened to the T, or someone broke into them, or something like that.

Thanks guys. Actually one time she photocopied her notes for me cuz there was some stuff written there for me to do or something, and insteada re-writing it all she just photocopied it. There wasn't alot there. It was short bits and sort of cryptic. She been around a bit as a T, so I guess she proly knows not to write too much. Hope so anyways.
Guess you gotta trust 'em. Hmmmmmmmmm. Got no reason not to, just not my way is all.
Guess its a good question for anyone to ask their T's really.
Thanks again.

Asking is definitely the easiest way to find out what's in them and how they're handled. I asked my T and she told me she deliberately does NOT keep her notes beyond the past few sessions, specifically because something that does not exist cannot be dragged into court!

Even just Talking to a T is scary, writing things down and having the T keep possession of it .. I did that, I would never do it again.
