a pleasant surprise

Posted by orchid on October 11, 2005, at 16:52:06

I am having some pleasant surprsise at work.. and again I can really see how bad my own self image is..

I have been basically telling my manager that I need to resign. And he has been trying to hold me back quite a bit. He is asking me to transfer to a branch in my country and has been trying to get into contact with people, and is asking me to consider working from home for sometime etc.

I thought he would be happy to see me go. I very firmly believed he would be extremely happy if I resigned. Especiallly given the slack in my performance 6 months back (though I changed it after that).

It was quite a nice feeling ..

It brings me back to the same thing of how bad my self image really is.. I think people do like me. But I tend to imagine the worst. Actually I was even thinking they might fire me a while back. But it turns out to be the opposite.

Same thing happened a while back when I was trying for a job in my country. I thought I wouldn't receive any offers and was too scared to attend an interview. I thought they won't even consider me for an interview. But it turned out that I was receiving more offers and I had to turn down so many companies.

Why is my self image so bad?

I think it’s great that so many people appreciate your work skills, especially your manager, since he’s the person who knows best how good your work is. Good for you!

> Why is my self image so bad?

That’s a good question! I hope that this recent evidence of the high esteem in which you are held will be useful to you, and that you’ll be able to remember it when you feel your self-image is bad.

Hi Orchid,

You have a fantastic career future no matter where you decide to work. Your current boss likes you.

That is proof that your negative self image isn't accurate. You just can't see the good in yourself. Don't feel bad, I can't see anything good in me either. Though people keep telling me it's there. I won't believe it about me, but you better believe it about you!

Thanks Tamar :-)

It was nice to be wanted to be retained back !!. But I don't like the companies in my country that much though.. Though they are US based companies, still their mindset is still quite bad in their branches there. My company here and in my country is an exception. It is actually quite very nice to be here. There is so much of freedom and independance and people are very open. The other day I spoke to a director who was in my country, and I liked him so much. He was totally non egoistical, didn't expect un deserved respect just for being a director, he was totally respectful, open and honest. I haven't had any of that with my interaction with any other company.

There is way too much politics, and favouritism, even bullying and being in the good books of senior people etc. I hate all that. And all the HRs made so many mistakes in my interviews.. Once they called me for a wrong skill set. I went and wasted 5 hours there. Another company called me and forgot to interview me for 3 hours. I was waiting in the reception for 3 hours !!!. And another company told me they will give me an offer, but were too lazy to work on it. Eventually I got offers in all those companies, but still, it was totally unprofessional. They even typed my offers incorrectly, made a big fuss about joining date etc.. Totally not professional !!. IT is going to be a huge shock for me when I go back there. Even the supposedly great ones are not really that good. Especially the working culture is really very bad. They don't treat people with respect at all.

I had a bad interaction with a HR today morning and I don't like her one bit. She is like a crying child screaming for eveyrthing, and she made so many mistakes in my offer letter, and is totally irresponsible and reckless and on top of it is so defensive !!. I was like "Gosh give me a break". I was so surprised that the company chose her to represent the company to the outside world. I would have fired her if I was her manager within a day. Such poor choice for a HR. And for all this the company is one of the top few in Fortune 500. I was totally not impressed with her. I wonder how they manage to run business this way.

Anyway, I am just whining.. Don't pay attention :-). Just a bad day.

I am sure it will all work out eventually and I will probably get used to the delays and waits and favouritisms and politics there. IT is just that I have become so used to a clean system, and it is horrible to go back to that.
