question on storing up many things

Posted by Randi on March 21, 2005, at 21:29:54

I have a friend who refuses to throw anything away. Her house is piled with magazines from years ago. I once saw a news report on this and there was a name for doing this. Does anyone know what this disorder is called?

My dad does this. He has piles of old magazines and every piece of paper that he has written on for his work (and he writes a lot). They are supposed to be moving to a retirement community in a year or so and my mother has no idea what to do with the piles of papers that he won't throw out. It is a hard problem.

Unfortunately, it seems that this hoarding kind of OCD doesn't respond as well to medication. CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) is the treatment of choice (I believe). Like I'll ever get my dad into therapy.............

I heard that there is something called Clutterers Anonymous or Clutter Anonymous. It's a 12-step group for people who do this. I tend to be a bit of the opposite, but I have a friend who struggles with this. It makes it hard to get organized and get out of her house in time to go to work etc because the clutter inhibits her moving about and doing her regular routine.
