Getting evaluated for EMDR today

Posted by partlycloudy on June 2, 2004, at 11:58:58

I see my T this afternoon and then have an appointment with someone else in her practice who does EMDR. I've been reading the archived posts from here and I guess I'm trying to go in with an open mind. The website for EMDR is so darn dry my mouth got parched trying to read it. I just know that there are too many things in my past that I am carrying around with me everyday. I really need to put them behind me or I'll never get anywhere.

Fingers crossed I can respond to this treatment.

My therapist gave me this article, and it helped me in my decision to go forward with EMDR. I have had some success in my limited experience and am eager to do more work in this area.

Good luck, and let us know how it goes.

I think I'm going to go for it. She outlined all the possible outcomes - and insists that I have a daily meditation practice in place (and I actually do!) so I decompress afterwards. She's very holistic in her approach and was taught by Dr. Francine Shapiro, who developed the technique. At least I feel I'm in the hands of a trained professional.

And I am so ready to put all these experiences behind me. I just can't go on letting my past interfere with my present life the way it is.

She did say I'd have to be 100% committed to go through with it in order for it to be effective. This is coinciding with me doing better (my meds were increased last week), so I hope the timing is right.

Will keep you posted - thanks for asking!

Thanks - it took me a long time to read through. I don't know if this is the type of therapy where we could help each other with it, but it's good to know I'm not the only one new at this.

I just read the initial post as well as the suggested article. I didn't even know the name of what I was going for before Aphrodite let me know. My T told me what would happen and I'm sure mentioned the name of the treatment but it obviously didn't stick with me. I did an EMDR treatment myself this week. I posted about it a little further down on this board. It was really exhausting and VERY emotional obviously, but I actually feel a lot better already. It's interesting...I was dealing with a rape (as well as a couple of other incidents that came up during treatment) and through discussing it in therapy as well as doing the EMDR, even for one session, I have been able to see the reasoning behind the unhealthy patterns in my relationship behavior over the past 15 years...and...I find myself not getting as uptight when my husband grabs me playfully, where as before I would get angry with him. I hope it continues this way. I would love to feel carefree again and be able to experience a healthy and fun sex life.

I am interested to see how it goes for you as well. Keep us updated :) Good luck! It's painful but worth it.
