There's a commentary at

http://emedicine.medscape.com/article/445722-treatment

The article gets a bit complicated.

Basically from what I can deduce, laser surgery offers less complication than traditional surgical procedures but there can still be complications.

If you have BPH (benign), there are medications also that are used instead of surgery (yes, they have their side effects, and there are two types of them which operate completely differently).

Surgery should be something that one gets if possible a second opinion because complications can affect urination and that can be serious.

I have been on Flomax & Proscar for awhile. They helped some but not enough. I will be having the Holmium Laser Enucleation Of The Prostate done at the Mayo Clinic here in my area. They were the ones recommending it after a prostate biopsy (no cancer found) and a cystostomy. My prostate is enlarged and restricting my urethra going through the prostate. This should open it up. I forgot to ask if it is permanent or if it will grow back. Has anyone had this procedure.

Being a female no but you're lucky no cancer. I do know that enlarged prostrates cause dribbling and lack of stream of urine. So now they can stretch it and restore normal flow that's terrific. Ask the doc. I'd seriously be thankful that it can now be "fixed". Congrats to you. Love Phillipa

The odd part about it was I had no systems at all. It was found on a routine checkup that I was not emptying completely when I urinated. This led to looking deeper into the reason and this was found. I had no problems with erections, peeing, or getting up during the night or anything unusual. The procedure is the newest and from what I have read on Google it's very successful.

um

i really don't know much about this, but if you are asymptomatic, and its benign, why can't you just stay on finasteride and watch for any worsening? I don't know about this surgery but the traditional iirk has some incidence of ED as a result

Seems the article flips around a bit from using for protate biopsy to just sloufing off extra tissue that lines the urethra. Same as a female and a D&C or the newest where they slougf all the tissue out in the uterus to prevent cancer. So to me it's widening the tiny urethra getting rid of tissue that is building up before it becomes a problem like preventive medicine. I know spelled the word sloufing wrong. Sorry about that. The medications (Flomax & Finesteride) are not enough. I am still not emptying completely.

Yes, the procedure uses laser to evaporate the tissue (part of prostate that is protruding against the urethra)) and widens the opening.

Yes, anything I can get fixed and get off a medication or two is worth it. Eventually the medications cause problems worse than the problem.

I had the Holmium Laser Enucleation Of The Prostate Tuesday (6-9-09. Sent home the next day. The catheter was taken out just before I was to go home but the emptying was not enough so they sent me home with the catheter. They said in about 10% of the cases the swelling prevents proper flow. I go back Monday to have the catheter removed and hopefully the swelling will be gone. One thing is for sure that the amount of urine I was retaining is unbelievable. In an hour and a half the leg bag was so full I thought it was going to burst. So glad I had it. I'll see what happens after Monday when they remove the catheter.

I had the catheter out today (6 days after surgery). Did a flow test and the results were amazing. I don't think my stream was this strong since I was 16 (I'm now 62). They did an ultra sound as soon as I finished the flow test and there was only 2 oz left (lower than normal). Right after the surgery when they put the catheter in I was retaining a liter of fluid. Now that the swelling has went down some I can pee like a teenager. I don't have to take the Flomax or Proscar anymore. Thank god for this procedure.

Do you know of a location on Psycho-Babble that is about BPH (prostate stuff). It would have more than this thread about it.

I found bits and pieces on different websites. I'd like one like the ones here on Psycho-Babble because it has a lot of people writing back and forth.

Bruce I know what you mean as tried other sites didn't like them. Since you might get lucky could you start a thread either on social or meds and add the name of a med and then go into the treatment? Just thinking. Love Phillipa
