Why Is My Hair Falling Out and breaking?

Posted by Phillipa on November 26, 2005, at 23:21:18

Plus it is not growing. I have the roots to prove it. Is postmenopause the reason? I don't want to be bald and I've been trying to grow my hair for over a year and a half. It's only growing about an l/8inch every six weeks. It grew very quickly before. Now all I have to do is touch my hair and it falls out. Hairdresser said there are wierd flakes on my scalp see a dermatologist. I'm sick of doctors. Andy Ideas? Thand as always Love Phillipa

Have they ever checked you for Lupus? I know sometimes, Lymes and lupus can mimic each other.

With lupus, you can have hair loss.

It could also be a vitamin deficiency as well.

I hope you find answers soon!

Hi Spriggy I'm supposed to get a referral for a rhematologist this week. Supposedly there's a crossover between lymes and rheumatology. They've tested me for lupus and supposedly I don't have it. But a rhuematologist may know other tests. Boy we have both had a lot of dx over the past year. And I sure wish I had that beautiful mane of blond hair you do. And I do take a lot of vitamins the M ones no longer. Love your friend, Phillipa

It could also be thyroid problems too.

Hi Phillipa,

How are you doing? How is your hair? I had a problem with hair loss last year. It got better over the summer and now it's deteriorating again, although not as bad as last year. I think you should have a complete check up with blood tests to rule out anything like thyroid problems, anemia, etc. Also, some dermatologists specialize in hair problems. They can pluck a few hairs from your head, put them in a test tube and send them to a lab to be analyzed for fungi and other problems that could be lurking down in the hair shaft. Stress can also be a major factor behind hair loss. Among other things, I had my ferritin levels checked. That's an indicator of the amount of iron stored.

Last year, someone here recommended Nioxin Shampoo. It took a long time to find it, but I finally found a bottle at a hair salon. It's expensive but good. I alternate that with several other shampoos, including some containing tea tree oil that I found at the health food store. Some days, I just use Johnson's Baby Shampoo. That seems to make my hair look best.
