Currently reading (and need for reccomendations)

Posted by NikkiT2 on November 6, 2005, at 10:52:02

"Madame Bovary" and loving it! About half way through, and am completely hooked.

I think I need some more romance in my life..

Anyone got any good romantic reads out there.. I don't like simple slushiness as a rule though!! I loved "The Time Traveler's Wife", and am loving the romantic classics I'm working my through..

So all help gratefully received!

Jane Austen.

"Pride and Prejudice" will be your favorite book after you read it. You will reread it many times. You'll also love "Persuasion," although it will not make you laugh nearly as much.

I suppose I can't mention E. M. Delafield, since she's really one of yours (are any of her books in print over there?), but she wrote some lovely little novels. In a way, "Bleak House" is a romance, and it is by an Old Master. (My nerdy joke on the subject: "Imagine how different life would be if Dickens had been paid by the word?" Of course, apparently only my mother and I get that one...)

OK, funny story to interupt with: I just came back from looking at my bookcases to see if there was anything I could recommend. My husband just came in to find out what was wrong, and why I was upset? I'm wondering what's going on, he tells me it worries him when I stare at the wall that way... Once I got it, I told him it was the bookcases and we had a good laugh.

I"m not particularly a romantic novel reader, so not a lot that I can offer there. Jane Smiley does have some that I like, although not particularly romance-style romances...

Nikki, couldn't you ask for something I could help with? You know, 'tragic novels of Old New York values,' like "The Mother's Recompense?" Or 'essays by a humorous doctor on medical subjects,' like "Bedside Manners?" Or just a list of children's books that were special to me, like "Charlotte Sometimes?"

{sigh}

Might seem an odd choice as a romance but I really enjoyed "The Remains of the Day".

I'm not quite sure what is going on with me needing romance.. hmmmm *laughing*

Yes, "Pride and Prejudice" is a must.. My problem is, I don't like "standard" romance, but I think I miss being woo'ed! Thats what I need.. books about wooing *L* (but no frogs, please *L*)

Theres actually an adaptation of Bleak House on BBC at the moment.. awesome cast of some very unexpected actors (but most probably only well known to Brits! A comedian called Johnny Vegas has been the biggest suprise). The main female lead is played by the woman who played Lyra in the stage production of "His Dark Materials" that we saw at the National Theatre..

I am in desperate need of books that hook me in.. That 90 minute commute home, when I'm so tired that I just want to sleep requires books that I can get easily lost in.. otherwise I end up spending a fortune on trashy magazines *LOL* Either that or falling asleep and missing my stop *L*

Ach, pity party alert!!

OK, so list me FUN books.. books that will draw me and make me smile!!

You know you ROCK right?!

Nikki xx

Hi Nikki,

Just thought I'd let you know that I didn't particularly enjoy "Never Let Me Go" I guess the whole premise of the book kind of left me cold right from the start. It just didn't grab me and move me like his others have.

Regards,
Damos
