does anyone here know of any good books? i tend to like nonfiction, anything that isn't self-help. i am a very picky reader, but have lots of free time right now, but only can go on puter for about an hour every other day..so i need a good book y'all! Heeeeeeelp

A great non-fiction one I loved, if you like autobigraphies, is " Leap of Faith: Memoirs of an Unexpected Life" by Queen Noor of Jordan. She's an American ldy who married the King of Jordan.. a really lovely ad remarkable story. Also its very eye opening..

"Girl with a Pearl Earring" is one of my favorites! Also check out anything by Jennifer Weiner--she's awesome.

Of course I do. The best book written by an Australian ever IMO. "Dead Europe. Tsiolkas, Christos." It's about historical memory, violence from the past influencing the present as well as a meditation on the Abrahamic religions, politics, all sorts of things. Australians don't normally write interesting books. I dunno what the problem is, but this is an old fahioned novel in the Russian, C19 British, or Indian tradition. Except that the concerns are contemporary. Very political and humane. Published this year. It sure isn't self-help.
I wonder if the double quotes thing will work this time.

Some favourites of mine:
"Delivering Doctor Amelia" - About the therapy of an obstetrician after she has made a major clinical mistake.
"Healing the Soul in the Age of the Brain" - A psychiatrist/psychoanalyst's case for paying attention to emotional life rather than only relying on medication to treat symptoms.
"The Uses of Enchantment" - A book on the value of fairy tales for children.
"The Gift of Pain" - The collaboration of a surgeon and popular theologian to argue that, to a certain extent, pain can be a valuable thing.
"People of the Lie" - A psychiatrist's perspective on evil.You know, maybe this is why I don't get much of my schoolwork done? That's not even counting the things I've stumbled across in French which I can't find a translation for!

I think "Memoirs of a Geisha" is nonfiction. Also "Angela's Ashes". Both are stories of very tragic childhoods. They'll make you cry, but they're enlightening.

"Memoirs of a Geisha" is entirely fiction I'm afraid.. I loved the book till I found that out *laughing*
If you want a true story of a Geisha, that is just as wonderful and corrects some of the facts in "memoirs", read "geisha of Gion"..

W.G. Sebald is great. The Rings Of Saturn, The Emigrants and Austerlitz. It's the sort of writing that would be great read out, my concentration being what it is.
