Hello,my name is sleepygirl, and I'm a book addict

Posted by sleepygirl on August 22, 2005, at 23:23:32

I spend hours in bookstores, even worked in one for a bit. I love the way books look, their smell. I can't stop buying the darn things. I don't seem to like fiction though. I wish I had a room that I could call my "library". It would come with it's own "smoking jacket" and a monocle. Yes, I'd like to be one big red velvet wearing, peering through a single lens freak. Then maybe I'd read all those lovely books.

Me TOO!! I have stacks and stacks and I've raised kids who love them too. I think I have 6 on my read next list. I like fiction, sci fi and nonfiction, especially biographies about historical figures who weren't in the limelight. Like Mary Todd Lincoln.

My fantasy is to have a bookstore in an old victorian with a couple of cats and never ending good coffee. I'd be independently wealthy so I wouldn't actually have to sell anything. :)

YES!! Excellent idea! (nm) » daisym

Sadly I'm in mild remission from my addiction at the moment and I hate it. Still find I cannot actually walk past a bookshop without going in (just in case).

Oh, I love the idea of Daisy's bookshop - if only.

Read "The Great Fire" by "Shirley Hazzard" recently and it was one of those books where you got so lost in the beauty of the language that you had to go back and re-read bits to see what actually happened in the narrative. Also just finished "The Time Traveller's Wife" by "Audrey Niffenegger" - incredible, but, and this is a big but there is a suicide and one of the characters suffers multiple misscariages so if they would trigger you I would advise against.

Maybe we should start up BOB Bookaholics On Babble?

I really liked Time Traveler's wife. I kept thinking "if only".

Thanks for the other recommendation, I have two weeks off and only hmmm...6 books in my stack right now. I just started "Inamorata" by Joseph Gangemi and it is hard to put down. And I finished "blink" -- fascinating stuff.

The worst part (wink, wink) is that I HAVE to go to the book store this weekend for college text reference books for the kid. Such a hardship.

Hey Daisy, I'm slumming it with "Scarecrow" by "Matthew Reilly" at the mo. Shoot 'em up, blow 'em up, stuff. Needed some light relief after 3TW. And given you've been so very kind as to offer recommendations I may just have go for a browse myself - sad about that. Hopeless remembering titles but I did like "The Kite Runner" I think it was called.

Talk to you soon. Try not to have tooooo much fun.

You like Augusten - no way! Loved Scissors and Dry (could you believe how many bottles were in his apartment), Sellevision is really funny too as is Magical Thinking.

Hmmm, I think I'm wound a little too tight today.

Basically a love story that takes place in the late 40's starts around Hiroshima (hence the great fire) and moved to NZ, England and it is just so beautifully written.

Self help huh, ever read "The Invitation" by "Oriah Mountain Dreamer", I quiet enjoyed it and her other two whos names escape me. I'm also a big Jasper Fforde fan like some of the other kids here.

oooh, ooh, I made a mistake! I read "Magical Thinking" not "Running with Scissors" and I read "Dry".
The man is a serious alcoholic-no doubt,
He was near me some months ago, speaking at a college, and darn it, I didn't go :-(

More than one I'd imagine. The DX was dysthymia. Been off medication since Jan-Feb. But just unusually chipper today. Probably just a reaction to getting some work stuff sorted yesterday that had been really dragging me down. Not gonna worry about, just enjoy it.

I'm terrible, and it's so hard to be "good" about it. Yesterday, I called Clear Skies from Costco to read her all the titles on the table there, to see which I would buy. (I was "good" though since money is tight this month.) That's not to mention the huge wish lists I have on Amazon, or the stacks that build up waiting for me.

Funny thing, the dessert books tend to go first...

Right now, I've got a stack and a half:

"The Mistress of Udolpho" about Ann Radcliff.
"Raj: The Making and Unmaking of British India" -- dunno what that's about...
"Appetites: Why Women Want" which is supposed to help with recovering from AN
"Intuitive Eating" -- both my T and my N assigned that one.
"Overcoming Overeating" which my T assigned
"Me Talk Pretty One Day" which got interesting reviews when it came out
"Fat: The Anthropology of an Obsession"
"The Lovely Bones"
"Blink"
"Eats Shoots and Leaves"
and a big stack of other things...

Anyway, gotta go now. Might have to check Amazon later today, though... Need more dessert...

Oh Racer, "The Lovely Bones" is one of the most remarkable books I have ever read. Be warned though there are bits that are really hard - really hard. But it is brilliant. Her other book about her rape and it's aftermath is very good too, but also hard going in places. I haven't read "Eats, Shoots and Leaves" yet but it comes highly recommended to me from a very good source. If you haven't read "The Time Traveller's Wife" I highly recommend that too. I bought "We Need to Talk About Kevin" on the weekend, it's next on the list.

See ya round the shelves :-)

Whoops! Got sidetracked...

Well, I did finally start "Fat: Anthropology of an Obsession," but first I read a book I picked up for my husband at a used bookstore as a sort of a joke: "The First Walkabout" about the pre-Aboriginal Australians...

It's a kids' book, and it's definitely dated in that it talks about "primitive" cultures, which is Politically Incorrect in anthropology these days, but it's kinda interesting. Even includes some Meganthropus, since the authors say that there are so many legends of giants in the cultures that *maybe* there was some overlap...

Bothered me a tiny bit that they discussed the "Negritos" almost as if they were a sub-species of the genus Homo, rather than fully human. Since they say that the Negritos, with some interbreeding, were the ancestors of the Tasmanian Aboriginals, it might make sense since the Tasmanians were literally hunted into extinction by the early white settlers. One way to assuage the guilt, huh? (Remember, there are tons of sightings now of the thylacine, which was finally added to the Endangered Species list *six months after* the last one ever seen was shot... There's a lot of collective guilt down there...)

Then again, they also say that there were still some few tribes of Negritos left on the mainland until recently... {shrug} I am pretty ignorant about current understanding of the various Aborigines in Australia, but I do worry when I see the things like a few years ago when someone said that the Aborigines got to Australia 80,000 years ago. That's before modern Homo Sapiens Sapiens appeared, which would make them not *quite* human, you know?

OK. I'm done with my odd ramblings here. I'm going to go read about "We Need To Talk About Kevin" on Amazon, and then do something productive with my day. Or nap.
