TMG

I wanted to try trimethylglycine but tend to get depressed when I take glycine. Even magnesium glycinate got me depressed after continued use. Any other options for getting the "TM" and not the "G"?

Johnnybaklava,

Might l-methylfolate give you the effect that you're looking for? If my understanding is correct, l-methylfolate (like TMG) is a methyl donor. SAM-e might also be an option.

Thanks for the tip! I have some l-methionine coming that I might try, but I'm concerned about the homocysteine, which brought me to TMG, which led to my concern about glycinegeez. What a mess! I will look into l-methylfolate. Maybe that will be enough to perk me up a bit. Does it still have the anti-histamine effect of methionine and TMG?

Johnnybaklava,

Thank you for your response. As far as your question regarding whether or not l-methylfolate has anti-histamine effects is concerned, I'm afraid that I haven't been able to find anything that definitively states the effect that l-methylfolate has on histamine. On one hand, I've read that methylation deactivates histamine, but on the other hand, I've read that folic acid tends to be helpful for those who are low in histamine (which might mean that it raises histamine). With l-methylfolate being a methylated version of folate, I think that it would be difficult to predict how the supplement would affect histamine, especially without any definitive data on the effect of l-methylfolate on histamine.

I'm sorry if I couldn't be of more help.

T.

I appreciate you looking into it! Yeah, I was thrown a bit by the two conflicting actions.

Did you get to try TMG? How did it work for you?

I've tried TMG a few years ago and didn't really notice anything, though I remember a slight "down" pang while on it. I don't know if that was the TMG or not. So far, I've been taking methionine and am liking it. Just a little "perk." I tried it years ago and it made me irritable, which is interesting. That's definitely not the feeling now.
