Vitamin D causing dry mouth, sleep problems

Posted by Bob12 on November 19, 2010, at 11:33:05

Hi,
At the end of October I took 1200 IU of Vitamin D for around a week. I then reduced down to 800 IU. I am experiencing dry mouth, sleeping problems, and increased irritability, which I think is due to to the 1200 IU being too high a dose for me.
I know Vitamin D is stored in the body's fat tissue for a long time.
When can I expect these unwanted side effects to go away?
thanks

I would go to your doc and get your vitamin D levels checked. Maybe your levels were already very high before you started supplementing D.

Are you are not taking anything else that could be causing this?

I checked my blood levels around a month ago, and my Dr said my Vitamin D levels were low when I was taking 400 IU.
She recommended I move up to 800 IU, but that was several weeks later, and I had already tried 1200 IU for a while, which was too much.

I am worried it might have interacted with the Zyprexa I am taking.

Hopefully the vitamin D side effects will go away soon.

Hi Bob12,

I'm not sure if the side effects you're experiencing are the result of Zyprexa interacting with Vitamin D. But I've been taking 2000 IU daily along with my other Vitamins without any problems.

I do have sleep issues, but it's associated with high caffeine intake and emotional stuff. And the occasional dry mouth is caused by working out without drinking enough water.

Maybe you could lower the dose and makeup the rest by increasing vitamin D rich foods and sunlight exposure?

Are you taking any other meds and vitamins?

Hmm, not sure how vitamin D could react to Zyprexa. How long have you been on Zyprexa? I guess if changes in vitamin D dosing bring on changes in symptoms, it must be the vitamin D and not a development in how Zyprexa is affecting you.

Maybe you are allergic to lanolin, which is the most common source of vitamin D used for supplements. You could try going with a vitamin D supplement that uses fish liver as a source, like Carlson Solar D softgels. Or, if you take fish oil, you could switch to the Carlson cod liver oil that has extra vitamin D, I believe it is called "Super D" cod liver oil. Maybe these other forms will not give you the reactions you are experiencing.

Whatever vitamin D supplement you are taking, an oil based softgel is most likely the best absorbed type.

Do you remember what your vitamin level was? Under 30 ng/ml is below healthy. Under 20 ng/ml is getting really low. Optimal levels appear to be between 40 and 50, but really we don't know for sure what is optimal yet.

Thanks for this info. I will ask my Dr what my vitamin D level was at my last test.

Since real sunlight is the best source of vita D can you try to get 15minutes or so a day of natural sunlight on your skin. No sunglasses either. Seems from what I've read that with all the cautions of skin cancer and the sun that now we're becoming deficient in vita D. I tried this summer to store some up by letting my legs and arms get direct sunlight later in the day. Hoping that helps. I have a form of D in my ca/mg K, strotium supplement. I'm hoping this works. Good luck on your docs appointment and levels. Phillipa
