Fish Oil Bellyache?

Posted by chujoe on May 3, 2010, at 17:44:17

I started taking fish oil recently, along with my prescribed Cymbalta (and Lipitor and Acupril). It seems to give me an ache in the pit of my stomach -- not terrible, but steadily present. I was wondering if anyone else had experienced this and whether it goes away after a while.

I've heard of it causing diarrhea, so I'm not surprised that you have other gastrointestinal issues. Are you taking it with food? That might help.

My doc said he takes 3 fish oil caps in the morning.

I said that if I did that I'd sh*t like a duck.

He said I should have some lemon juice (or ascorbic acid) first thing in the morning in water on an empty stomach to stimulate bile production to help digest the oil.

Why do you have difficulty digesting the oil Sigi?

With the amount of fatty food that I eat, it's a good job that I don't have the same problem.

You might think I would have plenty of bile.

One of life's little mysteries.

Have you tried spreading the dose out? eg. one capsule with each main meal. That might help.

Do you get the same effect from eating oily fish?

I only take one a day, although it's a strong one. With the other meals I take other things. One at a time is OK, but more would be messy.

How's the rhodiola going? Any luck?
