Is Sam-e ok with parnate?

Posted by inanimate peanut on December 27, 2009, at 22:41:58

Can I take Sam-E together with Parnate? I also posted on the meds board to see if I can get some more folks to reply. Thanks!

Peanut,

I just looked this up in a book about sam-e. It says it should not be used with MAOIs. (Sorry.)

By the way, when is your Stanford appointment coming up? I really hope they will be able to help you.

I don't know for sure.

Perhaps very few people feel confident in giving you an answer. The consequence of being wrong could be the precipitation of a severe reaction like serotonin syndrome.

What is your rationale for wanting to add S-AMe to Parnate? Have you tried S-AMe before? If so, how did it affect you?

I haven't tried it before. I was just reading about it on the board and on some links that made it sound really good (some Italian studies showed that it had results on par with TCAs). I got some pretty resounding "not a good idea" posts over on the med board, so I think I'll save it for a more desperate time.

I'm going to Stanford January 18. My appointment is the 19th at 10am. The more I think about it, the more I worry they won't have any new ideas. Oh well, I have to remember that I'm depressed and thus thinking negatively and hope that I'm wrong.

Be sure to put together an outline of what you would like to talk about with the doctor and use it during your consultation.

I'm actually really excited for you about the Stanford appointment. I'm glad you don't have to wait too long. Since they are on the cutting edge, I think there's a good chance that they will come up with many new ideas. Remember to take good notes. Let them know you probably won't be visiting again so they give you multiple suggestions in case the first thing you try doesn't work out. And like Scott said, definitely write down what you want to talk about beforehand. Last time I went to the (family) doctor, I didn't do that and I forgot to ask about all kinds of stuff. Oh yeah, you can ask them if they happen to know of good p-docs in your area too.

I am a subscriber to the natural medicines comprehensive database. The advice is as follows :

Parnate <<interacts with>> SAMe
Interaction Rating = Major Do not take this combination.

So there you have it, absolutely do not combine these two substances.

If you search the archives on sam-e you will find some postings and references to a book Stop Depression Now by Dr. Richard Brown. According to one of the posters he doesn't recommend combining sam-e with other antidepressants.
