Occasional use of Niacinamide--bipolar

Posted by Lao Tzu on February 19, 2009, at 10:36:17

I've found that OCCASIONAL use of the form of B3 called niacinamide helps my mood and depression. I can't take it everyday because I become tolerant to its effects and it tends to make my depression worse with daily use. This may be because of its effects on GABA receptors. Stimulating GABA receptors everyday may cause tolerance and possibly worsen depression. So I am taking 30mg of niacinamide EVERY OTHER day to see if it maintains its effects without causing depression. It definitely has a different pharmacological profile than plain old Niacin, but I also take Niacin at bedtime to help with sleep. I'll post my results in the coming weeks.

Have you ever tried L-methylfolate?

I sustained a robust antidepressant effect for 4-6 weeks. It then faded and was supplanted by terribly violent dreams - nightmares. I'm wondering if taking small amounts might be better. Maybe I accumulated too much of it. If I ever try Deplin again, I won't take any more than half a pill. Maybe a quarter. From what others have had to say about Deplin, my experience is rather common. Perhaps vivid dreaming is an indicator of too high a dosage.

Bipolar Depression:

Parnate 80mg
desipramine 250mg
Lamictal 200mg
Abilify 20mg

I've also tried L-methylfolate in low dosage (200-400 mcg). It just made me agitated and sleepless.

No, I have never tried L-methylfolate. I've had bad experiences with folic acid, such as mood swings and worsening of depression. Does methylfolate work similar to folic acid? I might give it a try if it is not pharmacologically related to folic acid. Thanks for your post.

You will want to stay far away from L-methylfolate. It is the final and biologically active product of folic acid metabolism.
