Benfotiamine--Schizo/Bipolar

Posted by Lao Tzu on February 6, 2009, at 11:51:05

Benfotiamine is a fat-soluble form of vitamin B1(thiamine). For some reason, I need extra B1 for my depression. The Source Naturals brand is the only one that helps with my depression. It comes in a 150mg tablet, and it's a little pricey, about $30 per bottle. It is mainly used for diabetic neuropathy, but I find it helps when I take it with other supplements. I've tried other brands of benfotiamine, but they don't seem to produce the same effect as the Source Naturals brand. Further, I have to take other supplements with it, including B6, vitamin E, zinc, fish oil, borage oil, and vitamin C. This combination seems to help support mood and depression. I first had to become stabilized on medication, which consists of an antidepressant, mood stabilizer, and an antipsychotic because I was hearing voices in my head. The vitamins are helpful, but they don't do a damn thing for psychotic symptoms, however. I rely on medication for that, which is very important for bipolar depression and schizophrenia.

The Source Naturals brand of Benfotiamine seems to act more like a mood stabilizer than an energy supplement, which might be helpful for a manic depressive. Regular B1 (thiamine hydrochloride), at least for me, acts like an energy supplement and does improve mood if you really need it. I don't think it's absolutely necessary to take benfotiamine, but it might be a good adjunct for people who would benefit from extra B1 supplementation. Go for the Source Naturals brand. It is useful.
