Mineral question for chem types

Posted by Green Willow on July 13, 2007, at 16:50:01

I have low ferritin and have heard that this can pull my calcium and magnesium levels to the incorrect levels. I also have Vit. D malabsorption issues, and I understand that calcium is inadvertantly effected by that. These problems are from celiac disease. I am hoping someone can enlighten me as to exactly what the low ferritin does to the calcium and mag., etc.
Thanks, Green Willow

Hi there,
I am not a chem type...so hope this is not too off topic...

but i do have celiac disease and the iron, calcium, magnesium, Vit D deficiencies are common in untreated celiacs. It takes at least six months of strict gluten-free diet for these to stabilise.

Taking supplements to correct the imbalences is a waste of time and money if you continue to eat gluten even in small amounts as you will not absorb the supplements properly.

Get the diet right, then have your levels checked again after six months.

Yes, I have been gluten free for about 13 months now. According to my doctor, the low ferritin apparently pulls the calcium and magnesium out of sinc, so to speak, and I would like a better understanding of exactly how and what it does.
