Increasing melatonin synthesis ?

Posted by linkadge on May 21, 2007, at 18:06:16

Hi, I am interested in supplements that may increase the synthesis of melatonin. I understand that b12 can help, also 5-ht2a blockers at nighttime appear to increase melatonin synthsis.

Does anyone know of others? In particular, does vitamin D have any effect on melatonin synthsis ?

Thanks

Perhaps supplements like 5-HTP would increase melatonin synthesis..since melatonin is manufactured from serotonin (5-HTP---> serotonin--->N-acetylserotonin--->melatonin) Why not just take the supplement melatonin?

Cannabis certainly increases melatonin levels, at least for a while.

FROM: http://phoenix-cfs.org/GSH%20Methylation%20Van%20Konynenburg.htm

"Durlach et al. have found that magnesium depletion is associated with abnormalities in the level of melatonin and dysregulation of biorhythms (129)."

"The production of melatonin from serotonin as well as the metabolism of the catecholamines require methylation, as noted earlier, and according to the GD-MCB Hypothesis, they are inhibited because of the decreased methylation capacity."

Well I've noticed that since eating quite a bit of animal protein, taking liver tablets and magnesium I fall asleep way earlier in the evening - sometimes as early as 10pm (I don't have to get up very early either).

But it's getting on to be Winter here in Chile anyway.

can you explain what melatonin synthesis is and why you want more of it?

are you trying to simulate the effects of the melatonin agonist rozerem? i've heard rozerem is the only prescription sleep aid that's non-habit forming...

i believe that taking melatonin may have similar effects. i've been microdosing with it lately. between 10-100 micrograms...i saw that Life Extensions has a delayed release product of 333 mcg tablets...not sure if they can be broken to smaller bits...

i think magnesium or b2 can be helpful if taken with melatonin, as they should help eat up stimulant neurotransmitters. without melatonin, i believe mg and b2 can interfere with one's natural melatonin production and cause insomnia.
