GABA okay, yet TAURINE made my anxiety worse

Posted by daorlando on August 4, 2006, at 13:11:16

I've been experimenting with GABA and Taurine supplements for the last couple of days, mainly to check out their potential as an anti-anxiety agent.

GABA surprised me. At a low dose of 150mg in combination with 50mg of taurine (I have an extremely sensitive brain chemistry) I experienced the most amazing calm ever. I truly do not remember the lat time I felt so peaceful, safe and content. I never tried a tranquilizer in my life, but I bet this is how it feels. Unfortunately for me, four hours later the effect wore off and the anxiety returned. I don't think I will continue to use GABA on everyday basis, but it will certainly be a

BUT unfortunately I am surprised to find that taurine not only didn't have the anti-anxiety effect that I anticipated but that it increased my anxiety levels, at a single dose of 300mg. This started to normalize two hours later, when I became extremely hungry, confirming the hypoglycemic effect of this amino acid.

Now, I've experimented with different amino acids before and I understand why Tyrosine and Phenylalanine for example increase my anxiety (excess norepinephrine and dopamine, right?), but I don't understand why taurine does that too. I had a similar reaction to L-tryptophan though, where a small dose of 100mg made my anxiety worse and the full dose of 500mg eased me out completely (also blocking all of my emotions unfortunately).

Does anybody know why this kind of reactions? Thank you!

I think it's probably impossible (currently) to say why people react the way they do to certain substances. It's a case of research and experiment and see what the outcome is. Your body tells you if something is right or not for you. Paradoxical reactions happen all the time with meds and supplements, that's just how things are with the human body.
