Coleus Forskohlii

Posted by verne on April 17, 2006, at 15:13:22

I've read this herb lowers blood pressure and may even help with weight loss. Lab rats were leaner after the study.

I bought some awhile back, took it for a couple weeks, and forgot about it. Now I'm thinking about trying a much higher dose for a longer period.

I think I noticed a slight calming effect - and what's really remarkable, no side effects. I react strongly (allergically?) to many supplements so no obvious reaction is a good sign.

Anyway I'm thinking about stocking up on it. BTW, iherb.com has morphed into papanature or something. I hope this doesn't change anything.

I'm a big proponent of forskolin and have been taking it continuously for a little over a year now. The effects for me are increased muscle, decreased bodyfat, enhanced endurance when running and an anxiolytic effect. I take in 80mgs. a day of forskolin which is the active constituent in Coleus. Good luck, I hope you have the same experiences as me.

Thanks for the encouraging information! Which brand are you taking?

I'm taking 50mgs capsules by Enzymatic Therapy, the root extract standardized to contain 18% forskolin (9mg). Which mg measurement should I consider then (in comparison to the 80mgs you're taking)?

This evening I took 3 caps (150mgs) and felt a little queasy about 20 minutes later but it didn't last long. I quickly drank a half cup of coffee and my spirits were the best they've been all day. It's been smooth sailing for several hours.

Is this something that I could buy in bulk powder? That would be much cheaper if I megadose.

I get mine in bulk from www.bulknutrition.com. I have been playing with dosage for a while now and have found between 60 and 100mgs. to be the sweet spot. 40mgs. before bed really helps me sleep. Also, forskolin has been shown through activation of adenylate cyclase and the increase in cAMP to increase peristalsis (the movement of the gut) so yes you might notice that. :)

Apologies...I just realized I didn't answer your question as to what measurement. When I say what dose I am taking I mean in relation to the extract so the latter measurement for you would be the way to gauge your dose against mine.

Good luck.

I was about to order at bulknutrion.com but balked when I saw all the information required to register. I couldn't find a way to buy without signing up so I abandoned the order.

Sites that require "registration" and lots of information (gender, date of birth) really rub me the wrong way.

Now iherb.com has gone to required registration under a new name "papanature" or something. (I guess "mother nature" was taken. Prices look about the same but site navigation has suffered under new management.

It was time for me to back off the supplements anyway. I spent well over $1,500 last year - most ever in one year. I went wild at first chinese herbs, iamshaman, and iherb, among others.

I gave up on vitacost, and to a lesser extent, "vitamin shoppe" because they both charged me for back orders that took weeks to arrive. Items were missing from vitacost orders.

I've started doing business with the "Better Health Food Store" in Michigan I think. I get groceries the next day practically. They're expensive but reliable.

just musing about where to shop next.

Hi Verne
Coleus has an amazing number of actions. They fill pages. CyclicAMP is the one most often mentioned. Lowers BP, I think. I had a mixture of Hawthorne and Coleus for my BP and have never tasted anything like it. In "The Zone" he referrs to Coleus as his No1 herb. Though its use in heart conditions (which?) seems more equivocal. I had a very good reaction to Hydergine which also boosts cyclicAMP, so I've wondered about it. It wasn't used in Ayurveda though, dunno why. I found the taste like a mixture of bitter and menthol.
