Caffeine docks into a receptor for adenosine and regular use of caffeine is enough
to produce anxiety and depression in susceptible individuals.

I have stopped consuming caffiene for 2 years now. If I was to consume any it would have a quite detrimental effect on my anxiety. It's an addictive stimulant drug. if you suffer from anxiety and/or depression then it's advisable to cut it out of your diet, and even if you don't it's advisable to cut it out of your diet.

I use coffee to counter the atypical depression although it does make the anxiety worse. I'm hoping some day to get off this merry-go-round but every time I try to quit coffee, the resulting depression is so deep and dark, I'm completely lost. It's like the movie, "Charly" when he reverts back at the end.

Right now I'm doing about 5 cups a day which is the equivalent of 3 pots anywhere else. I mean, I take enough ground coffee to make a pot, run 2 cups of water through it and call it coffee. It's almost espresso or as Louis Lamour, the western writer, would say, black as something or other and so thick it will "float a horseshoe".

I started drinking coffee daily last November ( for the first time in my life I became a regular coffee drinker!).

My depression/anxiety/depression/anxiety disorder kicked into full blown gear at the end of December.

I always attributed it to my dad's accident and sickness... but maybe this coffee has something to do with it.

*as I sit here drinking a cup looking at it suspiciously now*

Hey!

Yep, I'm a regular coffee drinker, although no more than three cups a day (instant) and two normal. I can't really say what effect it has on me -- I have always drank it (or some other form of caffine such as tea) I read somewhere that it acts as an AD....

One thing I do have to say is that European coffee is MUCH stronger than the stuff you get in the US.... I mean the stuff that you get in coffee shops etc. American coffee is really weak in comparison (IMHO). I realised why people in (american) films etc could drink alot of coffee! LOL!! I always wondered about that.

Another thing is that in Europe its always served really hot so I add cold milk to make it instantly drinkable but in the US the coffee is served at drinking temperature which I rather like.

I mean no offence anyone! Just some differences I have observed.

Kind regards
Meri

I find caffeine to be very anxiogenic for me, only in certain situations. For example, more than 300 mg / day and there's no way i could give a speech or do an interview, no matter how long it is in the day AFTER the dose. Those types of situations are horrible. I can't do any public-performing actions. To be honest, I get three times as much anxiety with ANY dose of caffeine compared to no caffeine in those situation. It's very strongly anxiogenic in those sitations.

However, an acute dose of 300 mg, besides the anxiety, is strongly euphoric. I love it. I used to pop 4 guarana pills per day, each 100 mg caffeine... that was by far my favorite part of the day... getting that awesome buzz, the shakiness, the motivation, the euphoria, etc.

More than 500 mg / day and I feel depressed and highly irritable at night. I can't do more than 500 mg.

That said, I usually have 100 - 200 mg per day in various forms. But I'd like to cut it out completely. For some reason, when I'm "using" caffeine every day, my working memory SUCKS all the time except when I'm on my caffeine buzz. When I'm not using caffeine on a daily basis, my working memory is decent. But then, my ability to engage in highly motivated tasks isn't so good unless I've got caffeine in me...

So it's quite an issue. I definitely self medicate with caffeine and I wish I didn't have to. It has side effects and it would be nice to stop. But I find it so incredibly difficult to do some things unless I've had a few hundred mg caffeine!

Caffiene may cause anxiety, but it does not necessarily lead to depression.

Caffiene shares some properties of an antidepressant in animal models. As well, regular coffee drinkers have statistically lower rates of suicide.

It was mentioned how coffee, but not caffiene, has MAO inhibiting properites.

Moderate consumption of coffee may not be good for anxiety prone, but I have not found it bad to use when depressed.

I agree

A nice buzz every day certain is something to look forward to... if nothing else to live for, there is always the clarity that caffeine buzz brings.

Yeah, i read that too. It's kinda weird that coffee could be an MAOI. I honestly haven't felt these sorts of antidepressant effects that an MAOI would have. I feel an immediate stimulant effect that lasts several hours. After that... there's nothin left of that coffee.

I think you might need to drink quite a bit to get substantial MAO inhibition.

But, if it is the coffee and not the caffiene, then maybe I could slosh down gallons of decaf to purge myself of MAO.

Mercola had something about decaf maybe being bad

I just thought caffeine just gave your adrenals a boost for a while.
Do MAO's also give your adrenal a boost?
Just wondered if that was where the similarity lay?

Yeah I agree with that!
I drink it for the kick and the flavour. I can't fool myself that easily to drink decaf and talk myself into it being the same...:)
