Phenylethylamine?

Posted by psychobot5000 on August 9, 2005, at 21:12:25

Hi,

I have read that PEA is sometimes used as an antidepressant augmentor to MAO inhibition, however, my doctor and I are unaware of any source, either pharmaceutical or supplement, for phenylethylamine/phenylethamine/PEA.

Does anyone know of a source for it?

Im not sure if u can obtain the "actual" chemical, but liquid deprenyl,i believe Nardil, and the over the counter amino acid DLPA all raise pea levels to a certain degree.

Chococlate contains some. Exercise also boots pea levels.

I've seen a couple of PEA sources, all a bit suss maybe. The first is chocolate, dark and sugar free. There are people selling chocolate extracts on the internet. I've never taken them. Someone had a patent out, I read, on a form of PEA that was long lasting, I'm not sure. And it is available from chemical suppliers.

Or you can take deprenyl with or without chocolate and/or DLPA.

The falling in love feeling. It's quite nice. But you have to have someone to do it with. I think for me depression and loneliness are bound up together, to some extent due to different ways of relating that are a part of getting older, it seems. We become more set in our ways, and more isolated.

You can buy D-Phenylalanine--which converts primarily into phenylethamine...it cannot be converted to L-tyrosine, L-dopa, or norepinephrine.

I get mine from iherb

Hey djmmm
What do you think of d-phenylalanine? (I've never had it). Do you think it might be of any use for people with low endorphin levels/low level withdrawal from opioids? You are on a MAOI? You get the PEA feeling, if I can so put it?

Thanks for the help, everyone. Iherb looks like a good source for d-PEA. Dark chocolate's seems great for PEA, but then you take in caffeine and tryptophan too--which is not all bad.

In case you were still wondering, Wildcard, Phenylethylamine is closer to being chemical name than a brand-name. It also seems to be called 2-phenylethylalanine and phenylethamine. Since it's a naturally occurring neurochemical with fairly a select audience for usage, I think it has no trade name, at least right now.

But it is apparently still available in a few supplements. It's effect may be mild, but there should be nothing negative about it.

Is there any way you know of to contact the 'chemical suppliers' you mentioned? I'm not sure I understand what exactly they are, but it seems natural that if they have or produce the stuff there should be some way to get ahold of it from them or their business partners.

Some supplement maker sell the closely related phenylalanine, but not PEA itself (or the long-lasting form). It's fairly frustrating, but then it's a complicated world out there, drug/supplement-wise. And frustrating for those of us trying to beat depression!

There was another thread on this a few months back, starting here: http://www.dr-bob.org/babble/alter/20050414/msgs/488304.html

I looked into sources and posted here: http://www.dr-bob.org/babble/alter/20050414/msgs/493234.html

I was all set to try cocoa beans or blue green algae until Chairman Mao shot me down in this post:

I had a really positive response to d-phenylalanine (however DLPA caused a bit of anxiety)...the D isomer provided a sense of relaxed energy, and motivation, without anxiety.
