How effective have people found tryptophan for insomnia? What dose works best for you?

Ed.

Ed,

I have never tried tryptophan for insomnia, so I can't help you there, but I have tried another natural combination that works quite well for me. The combo I have been using is 500 mg of magnesium and 500 mg to 1000 mg of the amino acid L-Taurine, taken about 1 - 2 hours before bed. What I have read is that both taurine & magnesium stabilize cell membranes, and both exert sedative effects & inhibit the excitability of nerve cells throughout the central nervous system.

Melatonin is another option you might want to inquire about here.

I hope you get some feedback to your question.

Hi Ed, Howz it going in Manchester?

I don't think my results with tryptophan are typical, but since late OCtober, I've experimented up to 3.5 grams per day.
Whereas some ppl find 500mg to cause drowsiness, I took that dose am, lunch & pm with absolutely no drowsiness whatsoever.

My Pdoc asked me to take a further 1gr at bedtime, then later he upped it to 2grams at bedtime.
Even this high dose did not make me drowsy!!!
At first, 1 gram at night did improve my overall sleep. But for the past 2 months, my sleep has been awful, at 2 grams, then at 1 gram as well.

I really don't "get" this at all. I take my night time dose with juice, a carbohydrate, magnesium, & niacinimide. No improvement. I actually think I was sleeping better with just magnesium at bedtime, before I started the trypt. I'm still hanging in with 1gr. at night. right now.

My insomnia includes, difficulty falling asleep, 2 or 3 nocturnal awakenings per night that finally ends in a deep sleep around 4am...however I have to get up some days at 5:45am and other days at 7:30am, so the longest stretch of uninterrupted sleep I get is about 3 1/2 hours!!!!
Needless to say I'm often hard to rouse when the alarm goes!
I have to say that these days (last 12 months or so) I can fall asleep more easily than times gone by (within an hour). It's the waking up every few hours that is the killer!!

Hope you get more positive responses than mine.
Good luck.

Jas
p.s I also take .25g Klonopin at night as part of my anxiolytic and RLS regime.
