Finally something that works!!!

Posted by Dick Hunt on October 19, 2004, at 9:28:14

I've struggled with depression and anxiety for most of the last 13 years. I've tried many medications during that time with mostly bad results.: PROZAC: rash PAXIL: drugged ZOLOFT: drugged/attempted suicide LEXAPRO: nothing/yawning WELLBUTRIN: panic attacks SERZONE: nothing/lightheaded BUSPAR: weird drugged-bad NARDIL: worked, but real bad side effects - too many to list! VALIUM: drugged/addiction.... a few others too... I now take a combination of supplements that is working better than anything I've ever tried, and without side effects! Every day, I take: 600mg 5HTP / Vitamin B complex / Magnesium / Tribulus / DHEA
I've taken each of these on their own to see what they do alone... The most important are the 5HTP,VITAMIN B, and MAGNESIUM... life savers! Depression: GONE Anxiety: almost nonexistent - nervousness tends to feel more like excitement/exhilaration. Even my memory has improved. The tribulus and DHEA seem to help my confidence level, energy and assertiveness (which was very sorry in the past) Hopefully this combo won't poop out - It's been 6 months on now... Occasionally, I feel kinda spacey, but thats probably the ~high dose of 5HTP... HOPE THIS HELPS SOME OF YOU>>>> GOOD LUCK!!

Congratulations! I am currently taking Celexa, with no significant improvement. I have, however, reinstated supplements into my diet (which is a poor diet at best). I am taking a multi; B-Complex (100 mg, twice a day); Co-enzyme Q-10 with flaxseed oil (60 mg, once a day), magnesium (250 mg, twice a day); Vitamin C (1000 mg, three times a day); fish oil (1000 mg, twice a day); Siberian ginseng; GABA Plus (which has GABA, niacinimide and inistol) and MACA. I am hoping that this combination will help me. I am also considering adding a small amount of L-Tyrosine and L-Glutamine and perhaps a small amount of 5-HTP.

By the way, what is tribulus?

Hope the combination continues to work for you. It sure is nice when we find something that works.

Take good care.

Tamara

That's really great to hear! How much of the magnesium, tribulus (I don't know what that is either) and DHEA do you take of each?

K

Hi Dick,
in my experience 5HTP definitely works, magnesium as well. Magnesium is very, very important as you say. How much magnesium are you taking and how much DHEA? I am on 200 mg twice a day (400 mg, that is).

Dick did you ever try St Johns Wort in your quest for natural therapy? If so I was wondering how you would compare it to the 5-HTP. I read of so many different supplements for depression, that it all starts accumulating to a huge handful of pills. I wish I knew what the best way to go is. I'm taking SJW and not noticing any improvement yet. I've been on it for 6 weeks.

Laurie,

Consider dlpa for your depression if you haven't already tried it. I found that it has a good anti-depressant response when taken at a dose of approxamately 2 grams daily. Take it on an empty stomach about an hour before breakfast and an hour before lunch. It has been the only nutritional supplement I have tried that has actually worked like that same day.

And give the SJW another 2 weeks or sobefore you give up on it. SJW is relatively weak compared to its pharmaceutical comparators, and some of those take even a good 8 weeks for a satisfactory response!

BTW, what dose and brand or SJW are you taking?

Hope that helps,
Justin

Hey guys... thanks for the feedback :)
I take 400 mg of magnesium a day (not magnesium oxide - a combination of different forms) and 25 mg of dhea... Tribulus terrestris is an herb called puncture vine - if you live in CA, you may have seen it -little horrible spiky seedballs that stab you in the foot :( It helps raise luteinizing hormone, increasing testosterone (and estrogen I think), but not beyond yor body's own limits. For years, I always assumed my problems were due to neurotransmitters alone, but I must have low testosterone too, because tribulus helps alot... St. Johns wort worked for me, but I had stomach problems and bad skin sensitivity to the sun... I worked outside in CA, so this became serious after a while (blisters where I got too much sun... and sunscreen didn't help either) Has anyone heard of mimosa tree (albizia julibrissin) as a treatment for depression and anxiety? I know it's used in chinese medicine (called the happiness tree), but I can't find information about its active ingredients or anything. It would be great if it worked because it grows out of control where I live (Alabama). Thanks- Later

According to this resource, the plant is poisonous.
