5-htp increases hunger

Posted by Robert Fairburn on November 2, 2003, at 15:47:54

I took some 5-htp last night and then nearly ate the house out of food, I thought that this was a strange reaction to 5-htp. Does any one have a idea why my hunger levels went sky high when taking 5-htp

Regards Robert

Isn't 5-htp a serotonin precurser or something like that? Serotonin is know for that, I believe. It increases my appetite. It's hard to realize that I am eating more; it doesn't seem like I am. I guess we have to learn to stop while we are hungry.

This ain't sposed to happen. Quite the opposite, in fact. Doctors call that a paradoxical reaction, when a drug/substance acts the opposite to what was intended.

Hmm I will have to give the 5-htp another go just to see if it happens again

I find I'm hungry mostly at night; if I can remember to eat before noon it seems to help quite a bit.(I take 5HTP daily). As to why, I have no idea either.
